Yep they said on the news last night that my area Lee County has had around 25,000 foreclosures. It makes me sick to my stomach.

By Aaron Deslatte | Tallahassee Bureau 1:31 PM EST, December 1, 2008
TALLAHASSEE - Gov. Charlie Crist said today that bankers and mortgage lenders in Florida have agreed to ask their members to voluntarily stop filing new foreclosure petitions and scheduling foreclosure sales for resident homeowners over the next 45 days.
The move comes a week after Crist said he was considering an executive order to mandate that banks temporarily stop foreclosing on homes over the holidays.
It was unclear if the governor ever really had that power, and the financial industry had asked the governor to allow it to offer the short reprieve voluntarily.
"Our goal here is to offer help to families at this time," Crist said at a press conference. "They need it and deserve it."

Re: Crist says banks being asked to temporarily stop foreclosure
Even if the banks show no heart, I feel that they should have taken this step on their own before being mandated to do this....the Governor is showing he has some compassion for all those families who would be homeless for Christmas season.
Praise God!

They also said on the new that there is going to be a whole new set of foreclosures coming up. They stated that it would not be the ones who took out risky loans. They said it is going to be the ones that had affordable fixed rate loans but unfortunately has lost their jobs. I just pray for the day when this is starts to turn around a little bit. They even had a report that Santa at the mall stated that this year kids were not asking for expensive things but were asking for their father to find a job or to get their house back. I would hate to be a child and go through these times. They don't understand what is going on. Its just really sad.

That is both precious and sad for the little guys and their families. Jobs down this way are few and far between, with all the businesses that have gone under. Fortunately, here, there has been a little rise in employment, as we are getting a few snowbirds back this year, surprisingly. But they (the jobs available) are snatched up in a day.

Heard also that this coming year it will be Commercial Foreclosures like we've never seen before. Entire malls, hotels, restuarants, large chains. Main street will be a ghost town in a lot of towns. Think of that each time you shop at Wal Mart how you are just KILLING the small town businesses. They just cannot possibly compete. We will ALL be sorry when our small grocery store or pharmacy or hardware store is no longer there. Then look out what happens when Wally World succeeds in doing that. This is not just a thought, it is a real threat and people need to wake up and realize this. They are the very reason that a lot of businesses are closing all around us.

Walmart...The High Cost of Low Price.
Exactly why I do NOT shop at Walmart, Linda. If you have not seen the documentary "Walmart...The High Cost of Low Price" you really should. It is sad what Walmart is doing to their employees, third world workers and local economies. The root cause of our crap economy can be summed up with one word and that word is GREED.

Re: Walmart...The High Cost of Low Price.
Yes, Becca, I have seen that documentary. It just makes me sick. I have also been a Victim of their Greedy practices. I have seen and felt firsthand the effects of Wal Mart and until it affects you personally, you probably won't understand. My husbands family had to close and sell their businesses after 53 years due to Wal Mart. There was no way we could compete and were losing everything they had worked for. My husband and I are still feeling those effects. I do not step foot in their doors. And we wonder why and how companies we deal with every day in the mortgage business got their stragedy, they are following Wal Mart. Lowest Prices. Until this country and the people understand that business need to make a profit (I'm not talking greed) to stay afloat, we will stay in the recession. Business cannot keep lowering prices or do it "cheaper". They will not stay in business very long. We CANNOT keep doing it cheaper.

Do you say the same thing about
Lowes/Home Depot there goes the local hardware store? Or do you go to Target? They are in the same league has WalMart. I don't shop at WalMart, because I don't like to buy Chinese goods and that's it. To blame the ills of your local economy on a store that provides jobs ( no one is forced to work at Walmart) and was a leader in lower prescription prices nationwide in my eyes is misplacing the blame.

Re: Do you say the same thing about
"was a leader in lower prescription prices nationwide"
They are not and have not been a leader in low prescription prices overall - oh, yeah, they started the lower $4 craze which has led to some stores even offering 'free' scripts for a small number of items, mostly antibiotics, really common stuff. (Publix) Costco still has the best prices, forgoing humongous prices to really serve the public. You cannot buy a thing in Costco unless you are a member EXCEPT drugs - their pharmacy will honor any prescription by any non member, and you will get the LOWEST prices in town, any town. Costco practice is cost + 14%, 17% on name brand apparell.
Shopping sales only is the way to beat WalMart, but it is a slow process at best. I am another who hates them (they put me out of business) but find myself there on some items from time to time as prices and my money are both low these days.
As for a hardware store: I wish I had one near me. I am tired of buying a package of 6 for one bolt, nut or screw. What to do with the remainder? Zac's would give me one of anything, but I guess his family didn't want to run after his death, or he was put out of business by HD, Lowe's, etc.
Bigger is not always better.

Re: Crist says banks being asked to temporarily stop foreclosure
We just purchased a headboard/footboard for our waterbed. We found one we liked on the internet but then went to our local stores to see what they had. Found the same exact one at a locally owned store and purchased it there. Yes, we could have saved a couple of hundred dollars, BUT... I wanted to touch it and see it in person so I could tell the quality of the item which is something you can't tell over the internet.
The salesman was thrilled to make the sale because I'm sure we made his month! I am looking forward the fact that stores actually have to provide customer service in this economy or face going under sooner than expected.
Personally, I never liked Wal-Mart

I am proud to say ...
I have never crossed the threshold of Walmart, and I never will. I will pay more, I will drive farther, I will do whatever I can to honor 'Mom & Pop' local enterprise. I may not buy much, and I may not buy often but when I do, I know where my hard-earned dollar is going.
YET ... I understand and can easily empathise with those who can not make this choice. My own dear daughter shops at Walmart - her husband works (for the moment) at Chrysler, they have a child to feed, and I understand her choice as well as the choices of others.
