New to this :- )
Hi, I'm new to being a notary/signing agent and I was wondering if anyone had any tips or advice. I'm wondering how much I'm supposed to charge for everything (I'm in Charlotte NC) and I'm a lil nervous about getting started. I know all of the documents...I used to be a closer at a bank...I suppose I'm nervous for nothing. Any info you have is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Here's the answer you'll get from just about everyone...
Good luck.
And be sure to click on the Orange Search button and search for Msg#33325.
Get to know the search function. It will be your good friend.
Read it and all of the messages that were added below it. There's a TON of information there. Be warned, though, some of it is out of date and some of the links no longer work in some of the older posts. But most of the advice is still as valid as it was 3 years ago.

Re: Shauna I am so curious to know
Yeah I know :- ) Well it's along the lines of what I did previously....I worked as a closer for 2 banks within the past 6 years and it's pretty much all that I know. I was laid off in September and really....there are NO jobs out there so I figured I would give it a shot.

Re: New to this :- ) Why? Being "in the biz" why now?
Surely, you know there has been an abrupt halt in mortgage lending. Why now? Just curious.

For starters, you may put something in your profile. n/m

Haha..yeah, I'm pretty sure that MAY help. Like I said, I'm just getting started and when I was signing up on this site..I didn't realize that I hadn't even thought about..What I am supposed to be charging for my area and all that good stuff. Thanks for the tip...I guess

Maybe there's a reason why there is no profile. Look at the address "Lifeline Lne"?, a medical emerg. outfit.?

Most important advice--be careful who you accept work from & don't accept lowball fees.

MW/VA has given you great advice! When a company calls you for work, check out their reputation for payment by using the orange search button on the Notary Talk page and also the Signing Central section of this website. If you find you have accepted an assignment from a non-payer, give the job back to them and let them know it's because of their poor payment history within the notary community.
Also, SOX (Sign on the X) always seems to prey on the new people. Do NOT work for them unless you want to do it for free. They absolutely will not pay you. In fact, do a search on them right now so you are prepared when they call.

One of the best bits of advice I was given was to always have a list with me of signing services that I should never accept, such as SOX. In fact, for some of the really bad ones, I've simply put their numbers (if I have them) in my Blackberry under "Blacklisted" so I don't even waste my precious minutes talking to them and let it go to voice mail.
