Interesting ad from craigslist

http://sandiego.craigslist.org/csd/lgs/566684070.html

Greetings,

I’m writing in hopes of finding qualified Notary Publics who offer notary services to San Diego citizens. We are an Online Traffic School here in California offering our students the convenience of taking and completing a state approved Traffic School from the comfort of their home.

In California there are twelve counties including San Diego which require online students to verify their identity when taking the final exam. During registration, students have two options to verify their identity; one is to take the final exam in the presence of a public notary, or two is verify identity via Online Identity Verification database, however, if a student fails this check, they are required to take the final exam in the presence of a public notary.

Over the last three years our company has grown significantly and we have seen a dramatic increase in the need for Notary Service. Because of this increased demand we feel it would be helpful to provide our students with a referral in the San Diego County for Notary Service. We would like to offer you the ability to place an advertisement for your business on our web site to take advantage of this growing opportunity.

We would assess a flat fee of $15.00 per month to have your business advertised on our site. If you are interested in this opportunity please respond back to this Craigslist email address. Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.

It's the first time I came across to something like this. Any thoughts?

Due to the increase and fraud and other cons and scams, more and more agencies are requiring people to prove their identify via a Notary OR takes tests in the presence of a disinterested third party (Notary). That part I understand and I've done that (was hired to be a witness without notarizing anything). However, I made money from the job, not paid money for the job.

What if 75 Notaries respond to that "opportunity"? I don't think so.

How much would it cost to take your own ad on Craig's list? How many others do you think will respond, thereby diluting your anticipated return? How much can you charge vs. outlay? Would you make a profit? Will this lead to something else? Why not a good web site to advertise yourself?

That's one minute of questions off the top of my head - I'm sure you will think of more and answer them to your satisfaction. Good luck

I do know about the requirement of taking the

exam in the presence of a notary. Seeing an ad like this was a first for me. I NEVER pay to get listed. I just thought this is simply a way to rip off notaries. Thanks for the replies. Have a great weekend!

You're right Carmi...

it IS a way to take advantage of notaries who really don't know how to advertise their services.

In CA you can go to online traffic school if you get a ticket, but you have to print the test questions and answer them in front of a notary who will then fill out the acknowledgment that the person who took the test before you is in fact the person who took the test.

You don't have to pay $180/yr to perfrom $10 notarizations.

Is this an allowed notarial act?

Is this a legimate notarial act in CA? What's the wording on the form the notary has to sign?

Re: Is this an allowed notarial act?

It's not statewide, but some counties allow for it. As for the notarial part, it is simply an acknowledgement like any other.

Re: I do know about the requirement of taking the

It sounds like one of those pay us to work from home scams and then you pay and they send you a list of places to apply to that you could have signed up for free...........

again, you are so correct.. you don't have to pay to get work...........

jmo.....

and could be creating a nice -n- neat list of notaries to sell for a small sum, all they have to do is dump the info... and... getting paid to create it too....hmmmm......

I would pay them

If I were in one of the counties, I would pay them for the referrals. I would give it a 3-month try and then renew or let go depending on how much work they sent me.

First I would ask for more info on their company. I would definitely visit their office in person to make certain they were legit. Plus I would verify with DMV that they were truly authorized to administer these tests.

I've done this type of notary work in WA for Californians who are traveling here on business. You can make good money on both the travel and the seal fees. Pay is cash on the spot. One job a month would cover the $15 listing fee.

Good luck!
