Interesting article re gas mileage and gallons per dollar
http://editorial.autos.msn.com/article.aspx?cp-documentid=450781&topart=luxury
Thinking about how many miles per dollar our cars get, may help us look at the actual cost in a different way.
While not particularly well written, it is an interesting concept.

Finally - real cost in today's fluctuating dollars/pricing
I really liked this formula as I have a Prius and when I say it is too expensive to drive somewhere people will tell me "not with your car", not making that true connection. When I told my granddaughter that she was losing money giving rides to people for $10-20 forty miles round trip; or that my car on the road for 3 hrs. was valued at $200, she scoffed. It's not just gas either, there are other operating costs, etc.
"As gas prices pole vault to new heights, mpd grabs you by the collar and says, "Um, buddy, have you seen how much you're spending to drive to Dairy Queen and back?"

Ouch, is right!
Can't wait for my smart fortwo. She will nearly double my MPD! While rated at 36 MPG, the reports of new owners on the forums are coming in over 40. Ruby ('96 Subie, Legacy) gets around 2-24.

And if you think that I tell TC, SS about my little secret, well....no. I just emphasize how toll heavy we are in Cent Fl
Don't know what kind of vehicle you are changing from, but it is value well received to look for non-gas guzzler ride. The first week I put $100 gas in my truck, was the week I found my car. Had to wait 4 weeks (projected 12, but one came up that noone wanted and I was offered it. Reason: no one wanted white, so I took trip to top of list to get my prize. NO regrets!)

'96 Subie Legacy. 20+ and starting to nickel and
dime me to death. Love her, but 200K miles is plenty.
Can't wait for my smart - but the wait is going to be so long... so hoping for an Orphan...(don't care about the color, just the goodies.)
Good for you on your ride - what did you get?

Got a Prius. My mom has the Subaru legacy - she doesn't drive much so my sister and brother do from time to time. They all love it. Nice to see she made good decision for car w/longivity.

LOL!! I just saw that and was coming here to post the same thing! Fortunately, something made me check here first... ;> Obviously, we agree this is something we all need to be keenly aware of when considering our fees. We also need to remember that this doesn't even address maintenance and replacement costs...
