'Getting your foot in the door'
There are many notary signing agents who are fortunate enough to be in a position where they have clients who call on them exclusively. The have gained a reputation for doing excellent work, and they are good to work with. The companies probably have their number on their speed dial so that, if there is a closing in their area, they want to be able to reach that notary signing agent as soon as possible. They will probably even leave a voice message if they can't reach them. There is only one person they want for the closing.
But what if you're new to this business?
The main thing you want to do is be patient. Your time will come. A notary signing agent will have to pass up a closing every now and then. This means that a company will have to go down the list. They may have to call on someone they have never called before and take a chance on them. And if you are that notary signing agent, you have a golden opportunity.
I call this: 'Getting your foot in the door'
What do you do when you get this opportunity -- this chance to show that you are just as capable as any other notary signing agent -- perhaps even better? You, of course, make the most of it. Do the best job that you can possibly do. Go the proverbial "extra mile" for that company. Have that company wondering: 'Why haven't we called on this person before?'
Don't stop there. It's not enough to do good. You have to keep doing good. It's like the Janet Jackson tune: 'What have you done for me lately?' Do assignments that take you out of your comfort zone. Chances are, it's something that no one else wants to do, or someplace that no one else wants to go. I had an assignment like that last night. I got the call at around 7PM. The closing was at 9PM. The title company had called on someone else, but that person couldn't do it. It enabled me to 'get my foot in the door'.
Don't become complacent
Just as important as it is to work hard to get your foot in the door, don't become complacent and believe that, once you're in, you're in to stay. There was a song that came out a while back: 'The same thing it took to get your baby -- it's gonna take the same thing to keep her.' It's so true.
The competition is fierce. Now, more than ever before, it's important for notary signing agents to do whatever they can to keep the clients they have. Stay on your best behavior with the borrowers, do impeccable work, and be a team player.
And if you are a new notary signing agent, don't despair. Be patient. You will have your opportunity to 'get your foot in the door'. And when you do, make the most of it.
Good luck.
