hippa violation at adoption paperwork yesterday
Uhhhh how just uncomfortable for me yesterday. I had agreed to met a woman whom needed the doctor's signature notarized for paperwork related to her international adoption.
I do these for free, and I don't get many requests. Well we had a snow day yesterday, so that meant I would have 2 kids and my daughter in tow. My mother doesn't like the snow, so I had no choice but to take them. So I called the lady and that was fine with her.
So I get there and the nurse takes me and the woman to an examination room. And I leave the big brothers to watch their little sister in the waiting room. That part was fine. Any other time I have done these, we get the lunch room. Okay so the doctor comes in and we sign away. Then the table talk between the patient and dr begains: Doc says, hey, let's check your blood pressure since your here. And she hops up on the table and rolls up her sleeve, then they start going over her trigliceride report and start talking about the husband's diet and how she is down to 187 on her diet other details of her medical history. Too close for comfort. But it was the doctor that initiated it. Yuk!
Oh it was so weird and soooo TMI!

you are so nice to do this service for free...when I do these, its usually the letter from the doctor that I notarize, after the patient has been examined. Then I mail the original letter to the client.
that was so weird that you were in the examining room....eeeewwwww...LOL

I charge normal fees for adoption docs...
Not that I'm not supportive of adoption, but giving work away in slow times doesn't compute for me, particularly if I've had to cool my heels in the doc's waiting room for an hour because he/she is running behind on appointments.
The other reason is that adoption costs are usually tax-deductible for the adoptive parent(s), so I provide a receipt and they can write my services off along with their other related costs.
I do give discounts to elderly, veterans, etc. The adoption process though, is lengthy and often expensive, especially for foreign adoptions. The parent(s) know these costs going in, and my services are just part of the process for them - and they write it off anyway.

Re: I charge normal fees for adoption docs...
Just did a "no record of arrest" letter at the cop shop for a couple doing an adoption. This one for free. (yes, I usually charge, it just depends on the people) While there did another for a young lady submitting a fingerprint report. She didn't know it needed to be notarized. That one gratis too. (hard to do one for free, and then charge another) At least these free ones were my choice, not like a couple I did last year for deadbeats .

Have you had to notarize a document for adoptions (adoption from another country), that states, the adopting parents will not harvest the childs orgins? It really turns my stomach when I see this type of document. Obviously they had someone who did this type of thing. yuk!

Ernest, Did you read where Julie said she does this work for free? that she's a volunteer?
Seems to me her choices are...
When her family isn't available to sit pay a sitter (for a volunteer position?);
Do the volunteer work with the children present when her relatives aren't available to sit for her; or
Stop doing this good deed.
I don't see the problem with having her children with her.

I ran into something similar to that one time. I just excused myself so that they "could discuss her medical information in private" and told them I'd be just outside when they were done. That is inexcusable on the part of the doctor, who should know better, but it doesn't mean you have to be a party to it. TMI is exactly right!

Both of my children were adopted and I spent a small fortune getting documents notarized. As a result I never charge to notarize any adoption papers. I do it gratis.
