Techie question re gamil notifier, and certificates in

general.

Bid wind/rain, power burp, black screen. Reboot, but had to press F3 (default settings) to complete rebooting.

Since then, can't get anywhere on www without a warning that certificate is no good, do I want to continue anyway (not recommended), and finally get to desired page.

I've been the IE security settings, tried to opt for what looked logical, and still get the certificate 'warning.'

Grrrrr.

Big pita is that my gamail notifier now doesn't notify anymore - can't connect because certificate is not recognized.

Roar.

Is there a quick and easy fix to this, oh Great and Wonderful Gurus?

Try using restore, set to a date when everything on your computer was working correctly. If that works, I would update my virius check and run the scan, it sounds like you might have a bug or two in there.

So, went to Restore, and dates available were in Jan 2003!

changed the computer date/time to this year, and voila - all seems right with the wacky world.

Thanks again, Barbara - you saved the day. (And, about five years, apparently...)

Certificates and the web

What is your home page? When you go there in I.E. 7, do you get a new box next to the address bar, with a green background, a padlock on the left, and the name of the company that runs the site in the box?

If so, the company has an SSL certificate to show that the named company really does operate the site. Certificates have a date when they become valid, and a date when they expire. If the date on your computer was wrong, I.E. would consider the certificate to be invalid.

It is also possible to install your own certificate in your browser to identify your computer to a web site, but this is seldom done. If it was done, you could have the same problem with your certificate seeming to have expired.

That makes perfect sense, Gerry. Don't know why I didn't

notice the old date before, but now it all seems back to normal. (whatever 'normal' is in cyberworld)

Thanks for your fine explanation.
