The Newbie issue,possible resolution

If signing in for the first time, the new member would be required to spend a minimum amount of time( 6 hours?) reading( starting with mssg # 32225) before being allowed to post..

Maybe take a Harry approved newbie quiz???? just a thought....

There is no newbie problem, it is an entitlement problem

There ahve been plenty of newbies who have joined Notary Rotary and then learned about their new business without anouncing that" Here I am, give me everything I need so that I can make the big bucks you all are! the other one one I love is "Everyone was new at one time" true, but not all of us stood around mouth gaping and hand out!

Re: There is no newbie problem, it is an entitlement problem

I agree with that. Not that I am perfect, but......
I didn't post here until after I had been a member for almost a year.
I read and read and read.....without anyone telling me I should.
Once I felt I had a question worthy of asking, I did.
Once I felt I had something worthy to contribute, I did.
I don't understand the entitlement feelings....I have always felt like I had some responsibilty in finding the answers to my questions before I ask for help.

JMHO, but I think alot of it has to do with today's generation - expecting everything to be given to them.

Yep, we're beginning to see the full effects of the self esteem building in children movement. They grew up being coddled and having pretty minimal expectations of them and now some of them are turning into adults and learning how the real world works. And a lot of adults who weren't raised that way, but raised their kids that way have evolved into the same mentality.

And it's just going to get worse as the years go on and more of these kids move into adulthood. Britney Spears style freakouts are going to become more and more common.

Entitlement? Yes. Generational? No.

I think there are lots of 40+ whiners on this board.

Some of the most entitled calls I have received without a whit of care of how much of my time they burn up asking ignorant questions about how to do everything to start a business are from people in my generation.

I have three boys who are all employed and working hard...26-31.

The kids I work with at my office are so smart and hard-working that it makes my head spin.

Smart AND hard-working. I'll take hard-working over smart any day. Man, it's the bomb when you get one who is both.

No entitlement problem, just a veteran attitude problem

<<<"Everyone was new at one time" true, but not all of us stood around mouth gaping and hand out!>>>

That refers to the snide and condescending ATTITUDE with which a reply is given to a newbie. Msg 231227 is a blaring example. Newbies want to be pointed in the right direction without the sarcasm and silly quips. To simply say to the newbie , "Start reading posts 33325, 188799, 138398" is all that is necessary to get them going.

Re: Oh, and yesterday's piece de resistance, 231095

Yes, I read all of them. My point is that it of no value to anyone to respond flippantly and disrespectly, regardless of one's patience level.

Simply replying to the newbie with "Start reading post 33325" will point them in the right direction and keeps the board professional and focused.

I am baffled as to why anyone's "patience level" wears thin with newbie questiond. It's completely ridiculous. As long as this and other boards exist, newbies will pop in and ask questions and as long as the earth exists, there will be new people receiving commissions, certificates, diplomas, degrees, licensure, etc. There is no industry that I know of where there is not a continuous river and new entries so having a lousy attitude toward a new person is silly and immature. Just my opinion.

and the majority of those people will get a 'real' job with a boss and other employees to help them, guide them and correct them when errors are made.

"If I train this new employee - my competition - too well, the boss will see that they are a better employee and *they'll* get that raise or promotion before me, so I better not teach them too much, 'cause I've worked here 12 years to their 12 minutes so I DESERVE better than her/him."

Politics exists with the W2 folks also.

what about the person with tons of experience who has a lot to contribute but has just discovered this site?

"what about the person with tons of experience who has a lot to contribute but has just discovered this site? "

Well, Sue, are you assuming that they have read that this is a professional site, are willing to abide by the rules and not overpost, etc. (Thinking of HowdyDoody) That they will not preach the '7 basic' anythings? that they will have their own established business and not ask for other's listings?

I think anyway that you are probably assuming these things, but as Misty said, most new people with a grain of sense scope it out prior to posting, if for no other reason than to see if they really want to be here with like-minded individuals and if it is like-minded individuals also. Rhetorical questions.

The newbies don't understand what is happening in the market

They are told they are going to make a lot of money, and then even if they do everything "right", their phone isn't ringing. They don't know that our work is down significantly too. I worked for 6 years before ever coming to this website because I was too busy being a workaholic and RUNNING from one job to the next. Now that the phone isn't ringing, (due the the mortgage crises, not me) I have time to see what other notaries are doing.

And, by gosh, they are doing what I am doing: worrying about the phone not ringing.
