Very strange...

I did a loan for a title company yesterday. The LO attended, and when I administered the oath, she laughed at me. Then she stated that in all of the closings she has attended, no other notary had done so. She asked me if I was going to do the Pledge of Allegiance next. All of this was at the table with the borrower. Unprofessional to say the least!!

I had a similar experience once only it was a realtor that had a bit more class than this LO. My reply to the agent was I'd be perfectly happy NOT to administer an oath if he could tell me how to justify the jurat...that shut him up. More and more I'm seeing/hearing about LO's that are part of the problem and NOT the solution. That type should go back to selling cars, or building supplies, or drugs. Care to share who this LO represented?

Had an attorney say to his wife at a closing, "This is different, this guy uses a log book and wants a thumb print - don't ever see that."

No, they are not required in Kansas, simply recomended by SOS.

The strange lines we've heard....

My favorite lines...

"Hold on... let me get the license with my other name on it..."

or -

"No no honey... not that name. You have to sign that other one remember..." and to me... "Do you have another copy of this... we need to start again."

or -

When a disgruntled LO got me on the phone and asked if I'd split the Doc Reprint fees with him...(happened because of another SA's mistake). I said.. "Sure... I'll split that with you if you split your points and YSP with me... no problem!"

or -

When putting a borrower under oath he said... "What happens if I lie... I mean I'm not signing anything right?"

Hmmmmm.....

Or you could tell them that it's no big deal, unless they care if it's a valid document if it ever ends up in court. Except it should be a big deal to us to make sure that we do a proper notarization. I find it's not infrequent for people to become uncomfortable (sometimes expressing that as laughter or joke telling) when actually having the oath administered. And they say "Gee, no one's ever done THAT before!" My reply is usually that either there weren't any documents in that package that called for an oath or the previous notary didn't do a proper notarization. That shuts them up, too.

I don't find it surprising coming from the borrowers, but how very sad to hear it from a LO or realtor. That's their ignorance showing....
