Virginia Notaries .. Senate Bill 550 has been introduced

• Senate Bill 550 will make things a little easier for notary publics by REMOVING the requirement that certain wording appear on the same page as signatures - something Hurt noted is a problem when multiple signature are required on a document that needs to be notarized.

Hmm, very interesting! I didn't like the new law when it first became effective in July 2007 (no more loose certs) but now I actually do like it as it is more secure in preventing fraud. I had an ack and jurat stamp made with my personalzied info, so I just stamp those on the signature page when the notarial cert is on a separate page.

I did a little digging, and here is SB 550:

http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?081+fuh+SB550+400218

So it looks like IF it passes, we would be able to use loose certs again in Virginia. Not sure I like that idea...

I don't like it a bit. I prefer my notarization to be on the same page as the signatures. There has been no major problem for me since the law was changed back in July. I will be contacting the bills sponsor to voice my opinion as well as our Notary Director.
