Closing Agent Application
I was contacted by MLSS to complete their application and these were the documentation requested. A clear copy of my valid driver's license "make sure all numbers are legible"; a copy of my background check; social security card; notary certificate; and references. Is this too much information needed?
They said " our fee for overnight doces is $75 and our fee for email range from $15 -$25.

I do not provide copies of my driver's license nor social security card for anyone for any reason. There is nothing on them that a signing service would need. A copy of my commission and background check should suffice. It does for everyone else I work for.

Re: Closing Agent Application - no ssn!
As PAW noted, don't give your SSN to anyone. Go to the IRS website and get yourself an EIN to use for all your dealings with any company. Only takes a few minutes.

I forgot to add that they asked for a sample of my notary seal also.

I don't know the rules in your state, but in CA, we cannot send someone a copy of our seal.

I have had companies ask for a copy of my seal and I tell tham it is illegal to do so in the state of virginia. I respectfully decline do so. Why they want my seal is not right since all the same infomation is on the commission certificate.

I was at a website last night that requested
DL number and exp date and the name of my car insurance company with the policy number....left those blank for obvious reasons.

first of all... why do you even care? are you signing up? their pay is not that great IMO
they want references so they can see if they can troll for new clients if you provide tc and not ss.
I find that the ss who make the most demands pay the least.

I am not going to sign up for the fee offered. I am not going to give them my references. Thanks ZeeCA for the heads up on how references might be used.

Yep! Pay the least, and create the most headaches for you, including having to chase them down for payment -- as a general rule... Not worth it, imo.

Some companies treat this like employment--it's not. I provide my Notary Certificate & Background check. This is enough. When I send a W-9, I use an EIN # (really easy to get at IRS.gov). They don't need by D/L or ss #. On the other hand, I probably should get theirs so I can track them when they don't pay!

Sounds like an invitation to have your identity stolen.

MLSS is scrambling to stay in business. I do not work for them because of their fees. The only thing they need is a 1099 and a copy of your tpl. I don't give out all of that stuff and I have a tax id number.
