Gun-Toting Notaries
I had an appointment last night (general notarization – not a closing) and the customer had some extended family members at the house. When I was writing out the receipt for payment I was asked if I had a CCW (I think that’s what she said.) When I asked what that meant, the customer explained it was a permit to carry a concealed weapon. I told her no. All three of the adult women in the house admitted to not only owning a gun but having a CCW. Two of the women owned glocks. They acted surprised to hear that considering my business I didn’t have one – especially with me making monetary transactions and being a female. I thanked the women for their advice and told them I’d give it some thought.
I forgot about that conversation until this afternoon when I was trying to enter the Probate Judge’s office downtown at the Court House. A little old lady with a cane was holding up the line to walk through the metal detector because she wanted to take her pistol inside with her and the guards would not let her. (This woman has problems ambulating but I guess her trigger finger works just fine! It wasn’t a small gun either.) Am I the only non-gun owner in Alabama? While I’m not a member of the NRA I have no problem with folks owning guns and using them legally. It’s just that now I feel a little vulnerable. Is CCW the norm for our industry?
Signed, Feeling the "Heat" in Alabama - but not packing any.

I can't speak for the industry, but I have a CCW. I'm a retired LEO, and 'think' I can handle the responsibility. If you have no desiire to have one, there is no reason TO have one. I feel that, since the police can not protect me 24 hours a day, I will protect myself! I do not carry while on an asignment, but protection is never far away.

I hear that. I'm wondering how this thread is going to turn out. LOL.

WDMD, I notice you chose not to disclose your
gun toting preferences (smile). However, your login ID is interestingly close to the acronym for weapons of mass destruction. Perhaps that says it all. LOL

Lets just say I would have no problem protecting myself, my loved ones or my property.

I am not a gun toting notary, however I do carry pepper spray with me everywhere (including on assignment). Anything is too far away if it is not on you and you cannot get to it when you need it.

I have a consealed weapons permit and I do carry a small 22 in my car but do not carry it inside. It's mainly for when I travel and I break down. I do carry it on me when I am doing foreclosure inspections in bad neighborhoods.

I am a CCW/Gun toting individual also
... when the need arises. With 20 years of Law Enforcement work behind me, plus military service; I think I know how to handle a firearm safely. Like others, I prefer to defend myself and agree that there are many places that I do NOT carry a firearm into.

Well, I'm definitely in the minority (again).
Your input has been helpful and enlightening. Thank you for sharing.

Don't have one, don't want one due to the fact
that I'd go to jail for shooting every animal abuser I came across! So best not to give me a weapon of any kind!

I've never had any desire to learn how to shoot
or get a permit to carry...even if I DID get a permit for whatever reason, I'd never carry a gun anyway...it's just not me. I know it sounds silly but that's the truth of the matter.

Mine's a S&W model 37 airweight. Like me, old but still works! I have never taken it to the signing table. For emergencies only, and luckily Ive never had one. But?

I shot a gun once when I was 10 yrs old. At a "no Tresspassing" sign. Dad gave me instructions on my Mom's 22 rifle. One shot was all I needed. Never again.

Sounds like me Stamper. I shot a shotgun one time and it
knocked me on my butt and my shoulder hurt for a week. I went rabbit hunting one time also. Didn't know a thing about it and I kept asking why I had to walk in the weeds. lol
Been fox hunting also. That was interesting.

Most loan packages have the standard 15/- page ....
mortgage/ DOT If I was ever in danger, I would immediatly whip out that doc, and read it out loud to the would -be perp. He would be in a coma in no time.

I carry to all appointments and have a permit to carry here in MN(and many other states). I do leave it in my car while on notary appointments but I carry open while performing my other job as a process server.

Re: Gun-Toting Notaries, Yep, I carry, have the requisite
CCW and usually carry either an H&K USP (single and double .40cal S&W) or a Kimber Pro Carry (1911 style .45cal). With a jacket and the appropriate holster the H&K never prints through and I can wear a polo shirt and an inside-the-waistband type holster and you'll never see the Kimber. No need to tell anyone I'm carrying and very rarely do. The one thing worse than having to use your weapon is having to use it not having it on you! Its concealed for a reason.

And now for the new form to be signed with every closing pkg
"I/We, the borrower(s) hereby certify that our notary: 1. Showed up on time; 2. Advised us he/she was carrying a concealed weapon; 3. Did/Did not place said weapon on the table (or used their said weapon as a paperweight); 4. Treated us respectfully and did not threaten us in any way; 5. The presence of the weapon was not a significant factor in our signing the documents nor was it ever a deterrent in the signing process; 6. Although the loan terms were not what we were advised they would be by our loan officer, the notary did refuse our request to borrower the weapon.
I can see the disclaimers coming now!! LOL.....sorry...couldn't resist...
