Looking for your opinions
I received a call to do a signing today and its within my own community. I thought great very little travel and they met my fee. Here's the wrinkle. In the confirmation email they wanted a copy of my E&O policy. I told them I was not willing to give them that information. They stated they needed for payroll. I told them the only thing they needed was a W-9. Needless to say the won't be using me. I have been doing this for a couple of years and never have I had to send a copy of my E&O. What do you think?

it is not uncommon to request this for the file. Some times, A companies insuranc carrier will require that the subcontractors they employ need to have their own insurance binder.
What exactly do you worry about with regards to this?

E&O and Bond common requests
Most of the sites I've signed up with request the numbers and amount of my E&O and Bond and in at least 50% of the cases they request copies of the documents. What Lisa states makes sense. If I were to make a mistake, I'm sure that her insurance carrier would want to recoup any losses from my carrier.

Re: Most companies want either your E & O policy number or
a copy of it, I wouldn't have had a problem with it either.

I have no problem giving them my E&O - they want assurances that your covered...now my CAR insurance, which I've been asked for - well, that's another story..they don't get that. Or my SS card or a copy of my DL...E&O and W-9..that's it.

I've gotten a request for a copy of my E&O from almost every company I work for, the ones that ask for the copy won't use anyone that doesn't carry E&O insurance. They want the copy as proof of insurance.

Too bad you lost a signing over this. I have provided a copy of my E&O to many companies. As stated in the previous posts, they need proof of your insurance. I do mark everything I fax or send "copy".

Thank you for your quick responses. I have been doing this for a number of years and honestly I have never had this request before. I do feel better that others have given out this info. Thank you again.

Wow, most companies ask for that. I am not sure why you would have a problem giving them a copy of that. I have sent a copy of my policy to many, man companies. I have been in the business a long time too and am surprised you have not been asked before and that you would refuse to send it. I am not sure why you would not send that to them since it does relate to your signing business. I would never, ever lose a signing over that that is for sure!

What does E & O stand for? I am new to this and was curious. Thanks.

E & O = Errors & Ommissions Insurance
for notarial errors only.

Errors & Omissions Insurance != Bond
A bond has to be repaid. Insurance does not.
No Notary with sense is without Errors & Omissions insurance!
