Question for long distant Notaries
In light of possibly being burned (by LFC) for a Notary that I had to travel over 100 miles one way for I was thinking about how I can prevent this in the future.
Up until now I have always trusted Title Companies (even more than Signing Services, with the exception of a few SS) believing that I would be paid.
Up here in NW Montana there are far and few Certified Signing Agents so our terrritories are very big. Even the close one in the same town can be over 25 miles away, one way.
What can we do to protect ourselves? I have read asking for your name to be on the HUD. I have a feeling many companies won't do this.
Any suggestions? Feeling a little gun shy now.

In the same boat here in rural Wyoming. Seems that our cities are just about 100 miles apart with an average size of way less than 10,000 people - heck, the two larget cities of Casper and Cheyenne barely have 50,000.
I would keep on the TC (or SS) heavy. If neither wants to pay then go directly to the lender since it is their documents that have your notarizations. Don't lay down and take it.
Good luck

Re: Catch 22--if you're on the HUD & it doesn't fund...
you don't get paid dime one. A few may agree to a way too nominal trip fee that doesn't even cover gas used. Same boat here in AR. Large coverage area, lots of time traveling, lots of gas used. All I can say is ask lots of questions, cut as many 'special deals' as you can. I simply can't take on some of the road trips I'm asked to do UNLESS they agree to pay no matter what. And even if they do---you can still get stiffed. Just keep on yowling at 'em.
