EIN Number application link
It is better to have an EIN number than a SS number to send to companies that request your SS number. I am posting the link for the application. You can apply online and it is free. And, if I remember correctly from when I got mine, you get the number immediately.

I am posting this as I had a PM from a notary who was informed by an accountant that it would cost about $2,000 to obtain an EIN number. (I would be looking for a new accountant)

How would that affect filing your taxes if you did it in the middle of the year?
Would you list both numbers?

Just list your EIN number on your Sch C., your 1040 will have your social security. Your EIN number is linked to your social security number, so any income you receive will still be cross referenced to you.
