Re: Beautiful, Sylvia - does anyone have a translation?

La Vie En Rose was written by Edith Piaf herself. Here is one translation.

LA VIE EN ROSE (English translation)

Eyes that gaze into mine,
A smile that is lost on his lips—
That is the unretouched portrait
Of the man to whom I belong.

When he takes me in his arms
And speaks softly to me,
I see life in rosy hues.
He tells me words of love,
Words of every day,
And in them I become something.
He has entered my heart,
A part of happiness
Whereof I understand the reason.
It’s he for me and I for him, throughout life,
He has told me, he has sworn to me, for life.
And from the things that I sense,
Now I can feel within me
My heart that beats.

In endless nights of love,
A great delight that comes about,
The pains and bothers are banished,
Happy, happy to die of love.

When he takes me in his arms
And speaks softly to me,
I see life in rosy hues.
He tells me words of love,
Words of every day,
And in them I become something.
He has entered my heart,
A part of happiness
Whereof I understand the reason.
It’s he for me and I for him, throughout life,
He has told me, he has sworn to me, for life.
And from the things that I sense,
Now I can feel within me
My heart that beats.

Frenchie/TN (Eveline) can probably verify the translation. Her French is impeccable. So much better than mine.
Edith Piaf also sang this in English with Louis Armstrong, but it was an entirely different version. I will see if I can locate it.

This has always been a favourite of mine, and no-one can sign it like Edith Piaf.

Re: Edith Piaf - La Vie En Rose in English:)

Merci Beaucoup Sylvia. C'est certainement une des plus belles chanson du monde.

Thank god you sent the French translation. Seeing Sharon's message I was going to attempt it but it is so difficult to convey all the feelings of this song I probably would have made a mess of it. The translation you provided is very good. In France, to see "la vie en rose" is akin to saying "life is beautiful" here in America but with nuances you can't translate of course.
By the way the movie of her life that recently came out was great. Marion Cotillard won the academy award playing Edith and it was well deserved.
Happy Easter to all (Joyeuses Paques for Sylvia)

Claudine, Bonjour et Joyeuses Paques.
I just read your message and it took a little while to "get" it. You are saying Frenchie is also your brother's nickname. Right? How funny.
French is not an easy language is it? When my son was in camp he was "French Fry"!

"French is not an easy language is it? "

You got that right - and the Canadian French is quite a bit different than the French spoken in France.

Thanks so much, Sylvia and Frenchie

I agree, the song and the voice are absolutely breathtaking, and I'm delighted to at last have the translation of the lovely message of the song. One of my major regrets is that I did not take French in school, especially since I used to live only 30 miles from the Canadian border where the St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario meet. French is a beautifully lyrical language.

Re: Thanks so much, Sylvia and Frenchie

I almost went to live in France when I was in my late teens, but my parents had a fit! My mother was so convinced that something bad would happen to me in France.

All the Romance languages are beautiful.
It is many years since I learned French and I am brushing up my French now!
