something that has made me pause
to think....about a month ago, I was swamped. My top lender calls and I cannot take it, but because of the repore she and I have, she knows I can get another to handle it, as in the past and never had a problem. (Bob, where the hell are you?) The first 5 on my list are not available...so and I know...it's my own fault, I go to notrot's list and pick someone based on what their profile states and she takes it. I'm thinking great! My work is done. I am in such a freaking nightmare over this. From title I heard about all the GLARING mistakes, and this lender doesn't want to use me anymore...My name is all over the file because I was the vendor hired. Now then after repeated attempts. phone calls and so on, I finally hear from the notary that the guy couldn't speak English (he's Indian) and that he was signing his wife's name as she was not there. I saved my ass with my lender because it was SO apparent that I hadn't touched this case but the bottom line is I have learned my lesson on profile puke! Never again.

Sorry to hear that, glad you were able to clear your good name! I had a similar situation a few years ago when I would recomend a local notary, after a few months I started hearing, sorry, we cannot use her because, 1- she held docs for more $$. 2- docs so messed up reclose was only recourse, 3- never showed up to the closing! And here I am thinking she is good!

I'm a notary signing agent. I've been advertising & doing loan signings for about 2 years. I'm fairly new to this industry and don't have a lot of companies I work for yet.
How do I get myself in the door & prove that I'm a good notary. I've done lots of closings (about 3 a week or so) and have not had to redo any work because of my own fault. In fact, there are several companies that I'm at the top of the list for in my area because they know I'm reliable, good communicator, and very attentive to detail.
If companies are afraid of profiles, what do I do to get more business?

Re: Erica...thanks, Charm...but, when I
decided to go back to the 8 to 5 world, I put my best tips into two sources mentioned in my profile.
Pretty much what I know to help someone starting out is in my blog or one of the sources mentioned in this post.
Thank you! Your kind words mean a lot.

Seems to me that a lot of these problems could be prevented by asking just a few really simple questions. What's venue mean? Difference between Jurat and Ack. What does non-obligated spouse mean? What would you do if if one of the signers was not present? Tho' the answers would be important, I'd be listening also for 'does this person talk the talk'? If they can't talk the talk, they can't walk the walk.

those are too easy Lee! How about would you conduct the closing and let one spouse sign for self and missing spouse? Or, even better....nobody could communicate!

Yeah....easy, but when they say 'venue?', it's a starting point for a more in-depth conversation or thanking them & hanging up. C'mon, Charm, you can tell a newbie a mile away. As for the profiles, I can imagine that a complete newbie would either not say very much or crib from a more experienced notary's profile. Heck, there's one in my area that isn't even a notary! And it shows.

This is just a small dose of what the SS's & TC's go through and why many of the companies I work for any more won't let me get another notary to cover if I can't do the job.

I only hire notaries I personally know!
It's not worth screwing up your reputation by using someone you don't know: there are so many flakes out there!

Profiles definitely not an indication of abilities
I closed a loan about 4 months ago for a couple of which the wife had been bedridden because of premature labor. She needed a pillow in the chair to sit and close the loan. If you can believe this, the wife had decided to become a mobile signing agent and had listed her profile in a couple of places. This loan (for them) occurred at around 12:00pm. She told me that she had her first ever 3 loans to close before that day was up, with no printer, no idea what was to happen, etc. I was flabbergasted to say the least. It was the end of the month. She was charging about $75.00 for each one. After I left the closing, I called her back and told her it would be best for her and the industry not to take anymore closing (I doubt she was able to close any of those loans) until she was capable of doing the job. She is still listed on some of the sites.
