Answer Your Phone
You want to work in this industry? Answer your phone.
I don't care where I am I answer my phone except when watching a movie in a movie theater and then I put the cell on vibrate with blue tooth in my ear so I can get to the lobby and talk.
I bet I answer my cell phone 98% of the time.
Answering your phone is one of the best ways to receive a loan signing assignment or public notary work.
This policy of mine hasn't changed since 2002 when I became a CA Notary/Loan-Signer.
I was teaching a notary class today in CA (Pasadena) and it killed me to turn off the phone during the 6 hour class. I turned the cell on at lunch and got a call and missed 2 others.
Those 2 assignments were gone with the wind.
You will miss assignments if you don't answer your phone, particularly, when you do a day time signing because that is when most signing and title/etc companies call.
Don't stay on the phone for more than 1 minute and don't answer a 2nd phone call at the signing.
Don't answer your phone if it is your family/friends unless it is a dire emergency.
Your cell phone at a loan signing is not to be answered to settle a fight between your kids. Hang up on the kids immediately!

Put your phone on vibrate. It works even in church. I just get up and go out side and answer it. I agee you have to answer your phone first before you can work in this business.

I amswer my phone 99% of the time. I always have it with me. It is a rare occassion that I miss a phone call. If during a signing a family memeber calls I hit "ignore". If it is a company....I say "oh I need to take this....it may be the title company or lender for your loan". I discreatley accpet the appointment and tell them that I will call back- as I am in a signing. It works everytime! I have accpeted job orders at 10pm at night- West Coast calling me in....you must be connected!!!!

This is so true
I have a friend who is also a signing agent. She complains about not getting any signings and always asks me how many I got for the month. I live in a very rural area, but I get 15 to 20 more a month than she does. She lives in a very populated area, I have tried calling her for the past 2 month on her Cell and home number, no answer. I finally emailed her, how do you expect to get signings if you don't answer your phone.

Re: This is so true
I received an email from a SS around at 8:30 at night but did not see it until 10:30 p.m. I did not get a phone call (my phone was with me on vibrate I was at a hospital visiting). Is that normal to get an email only and not a phone call?

I have had that happen to me...
It is very frustrating since I am available and always answer my phone. I contacted Verizon and was told it is because I was in an area with no reception so the call goes to voicemail. I have not had it happen too much lately but every once in a while it does. I have to agree with everyone else here who says "answer your phone". At least make the contact. You can always call them back but if you don't answer you know they will go on to the next notary on the list and that job is gone.

Re: This is so true
I get emails all the time about a signing. I have a Blackberry and can get my email on my phone, I get an alert that I have an email and I can answer the email right away. People are amazed at how quickly I reply to their email.

I have different rings for my kids
That way I don't even have to look! I also do the same as CF, tell the borrowers, "This could be regarding your loan". Never had a borrower complain... My phone goes EVERYwhere. I even have a little shelf next to my shower.

Re: I have different rings for my kids
Because I work from home, I can get my business phone at all hours of night and day. I've had calls needing a general notarization that the person was pretty far away. When told they might be better off calling someone closer, they say they did, but no one answers.
