Anyone have an HP Scanjet 8290?
I just bought one off EBAY. It has the ADF. I can't seem to figure out how to get it to automatically scan a mixture of legal and letter sizes - it looks like I have to choose one size when I begin the scan. Anyone know if scanning mixed sizes is possible?

No, but....
My Brother is the same, so when I scan mixed packages, I always choose legal, and it seems to recognize the different sizes of paper.

Re: No, but....
When I set it to legal and scan a mixture of legal and letter, everything scans as legal size. It will work for my purposes, but I was hoping to figure out a way that it would automatically scan the legal to legal and the letter to letter. Other than that, I love it!

What application are you scanning to? Does that application support TWAIN? That is, the ScanJet is a TWAIN device that can be selected through the application. The TWAIN drivers that 'drive' the scanner. I have an HP LJ 3330 mfp. Using different applications, I'm able to scan directly from the scanner where the resulting image is that actual scanned size.
I don't have access to an 8290, so I can't be more specific.

I'm scanning into Adobe Acrobat using the TWAIN interface - I don't see any options for having the scanner auto-select the paper size it's scanning. I can select many different paper sizes from a drop-down box, but nothing that seems to allow for both letter and legal together on the same scan.

When I scan into Acrobat, the scan dialog ("Create PDF from Scanner) does not offer different page sizes. The second dialog box (Scan Settings) asks how I would like to scan: Photo Only, Text Only, Mixed color, Mixed Grayscale or Custom. For documents, I always select "Text". Then the scanner starts. Page size is determined by the scanner ADF. For example, if I have a legal page followed by a letter page, then that's the resulting size of the pages in the PDF file.
Note: The "Scan Settings" dialog will be scanner specific, so your options may differ from mine.

Thanks for the info, Paul. My first dialog box sounds like yours. My second dialog box does the same as yours, except after I select "ADF" and "Text" then I must also choose the document size from a drop-down box.

Bummer. I guess the Scanjet ADF doesn't send the page size back to the driver like it does on the Laserjet mfp's.
