A few things you should think about
When Katrina hit I raised my rates and told all my clients when it went down I would adjust back to my normal rate. I also cut back on travel, I would travel half the state now I stay local and SS and TC's know to use someone close if they can.
This time around it's different, not enough work out there to raise rates and keep clients. 50 miles is far for gas charge, myself it would be set @ 5/20 miles, 10/40 and 20 anything over 40 miles that is if times are good. My only other choice is to cut back even more on the amount I travel to save on gas.
65 dollars today to fill the SUV 16/gallons avg trip for me is 30-40 miles round trip thats 3-4 gallons of gas (16 dollars just for gas on a local run) Gas will hit 5 bucks a gallon within the next 2 months.
The only way a gas charge will work for us is if everyone charged it and the NNA pushed it or other Notary boards. Do a 50 dollar signing now and half goes to gas. (no one is that stupid)I hope

I have always charged for mileage. Other than printing and maybe faxbacks, what else is your fee based on.? I charge a flat fee for x local miles plus x amt over that. With these prices, I've raised my flat fee and overage. Next will be to shorten the local miles.

I have a set radius (15 miles one way) that I travel which I have included in my fee. If the SS/TC wants to schedule me outside of that radius, I increase my fee proportionately. I rarely accept any signings more than 35 miles one way. On the rare occasion that I do one, I charge for the extra mileage.

Charge at least $1.50 per mile driven plus a.....
decent hourly rate for your travel time. (My travel rate starts at $30 per hour.)
I found a great website that gives you the true cost to own and operate your car. It is published by the Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission in California.
http://www.commutesolutions.org/calc.htm
Note that they come up with a base of $1.19 per mile to own and operate your car. I telephoned them to ask when the calculator was created so I could adjust for gas price increase.
They said 2004.
They are in the process of updating all the figures on the site and the new calculator will be available in early June.
I've been assuming $1 per mile PLUS $30 per hour for my time. For now, I'm going to assume $1.50 per mile and adjust that number next month when the new calculator is out.
If you send them a request to be on their announcement list, they will send you an email when the calculator is updated.
