Magic Jack

Several weeks ago there was discussion about Magic Jack--now that some of you have had it for a while, would you still recommend it?? TIA

I wouldn't recommend it - - - yet. The annual price of $20 is so fantastic I'm still trying to make it work.

I have several problems with my MagicJack. Phone rings only one but the ring lasts forever including at least 5 long seconds after I pick up the receiver.

I don't like that there is no special sound when I pick up the receiver that tells me if I have a voicemail message. My other Voip service has this and I love it.

I had lots of set up problems. I installed and ran their MagicFix and advanced version of same. I rebooted entire system. I changed phone sets. I still have problems. I've been on TechChat several times. Things are not yet working smoothly.

But $20 per year includes all calls to anyone in US and Canada. So I persevere.

My 2 cents. Good luck!

I have it but hardly use it as they do not have my area code yet. I used it for about a week for outbound calls only. I did test inbound calls but not very much. I am going to keep mine.

I am past my trial period. I kept it. I use it only for outbound calls. I have been able to sent out 50 or more pages with an old panasonic fax machine.

My Magic Jack arrived today. CalNotary, how do you connect this to your fax machine?

Every time I tried to fax with it I would either get errors and the receiving party would not get or it would take to long to connect.

I would love to use it for faxing if I could get it to work.

Any tips cali

I've had the MJ for about 3 months. The MJ will do what any other voip (includes faxing) within these parameters:

1. Your internet up/down speed is atleast 2Mbps or higher.
2. Your USB port is 2.0 (some older computer still run on USB1.1). Running other USB devices (ie printer) simultaneously affect the data transfer rate to your MJ device.
3. The use of a voip or programmable phone (handset) is preferable over conventional handset. I still have and use the SunRocket voip handset, it has different ring tone and caller ID.

Set up is a bit tricky with windows XP b/c the jack shipped with Vista compatible software installed.

Not in my case Andy, my internet speed is 740kbs and I use an old panasonic fax that I think it uses a modem with a 9600bps. All I have to do is close everything in my xp pc(all browsers) and just leave the magic jack working.

I am using an old xp pc(4 years) with a intel celeron. I did not install the magic jack in my office machines since I red some where that magic jack installs some spyware or something so I do not want anything install in my machines that I use for edocs.

Ok sometimes it is difficult to send 10 pages and at the end it says it was an error but I was able to send 9 out of the ten original pages I was supposed to sent.

When I fax I will let connect till I hear 2 or 3 times the "fax tone" then I press connect.

Like I said before one time I was able to fax more than 50 pages then I stopped because I had to do something else or I do not remember. All my voice calls are crystal clear when I first tried it in my fax in my office, with my hp-3015 it did not worked and it gave me an error message, I tried to lower the baud speed on that fax and there is no way I could do it.

So if you want use your magic jack as a fax try to use an old fax machine with a baud speed around 9600bps.

I have a magic jack and I can only fax to another land line fax machine . I too have the same ability as Andy says that is needed. I spent $60.00 for a fax machine that I could change the speed on and I am sure that my Dell's usb port is what Andy says is required. I think that I have found that the reason I cant send a good fax is with A fax to internet fax service ie EFax. I get an error in comuncation message . I have tried it with both Ocean Pacific an 1st CNS. I think both use an EFax service. I love it for all my out bound calls.
