Microsoft Office Installation on New Computer

I'm wondering - I have MS office Business 2003 registered on my old computer that I am getting rid of. I've tried Office 2007 and don't like it. If I remove 2003 from my old computer, is it legal to put it on my new computer? It is OEM software from Dell that was paid for and came installed on my old computer.

I had intended on buying it new, but I just don't like office 2007 and prefer to keep using the software I have been.

As long as you have the product key, you should have no problem installing it.

Joan, if the software "can" be installed you will probably have to call MS to explain that it has been removed from one and now is going to be installed on another.

Since Office 2000 (I think) MS has created a registration system which only allows for Office installation on two personal computers.

It is OEM software from Dell that was paid for and came installed on my old computer. I would be surprised if this particular OEM software would be installable on anything but the original. I've never tried to do that, but from what I understand this is the case.

Sorry Joan...I ran your quote into my answer above.

ON the second question. Here's what I meant to say.

**It is OEM software from Dell that was paid for and came installed on my old computer.**

I would be surprised if this particular OEM software would be installable on anything but the original computer (or same model) that it came with. I've never tried to do that, but from what I understand this is the case.

I think you're right

I printed out that 22 page end user agreement that we click the box to "accept" when installing and it appears OEM can only be used on the computer it came on.

Last month I purchased a laptop with Vista and Office 2007. I shipped it back to Dell last week and ordered an XP computer. While I had it, I decided I did not like Office 2007 and would prefer to stay with Office 2003. I don't know if the 2007 was hinky because of the Vista or I just didn't like it, but the Outlook data was always corrupting and you have to save a Word 2007 as a previous version so that most people can open it.

You can only buy office 2003 from Ebay and I don't know that the code hasn't been used yet, so off I go to Sams Club to buy the 2007. Hope it works well with XP.

I guess this is the price I pay for paying a reduced price for OEM software. Just another item to "write off" :-)

Good News - Gotta Love Dell.

I found a workable solution. My sister purchased 2 computers from Dell about a year and a half ago. Through Dell, she purchased MS Office 2003 for 3 users. She's only used 2 and has offered me the 3rd! Believe it or not, they offered it to her for $150 total! That's about $450 - $500 of software - Probably because she had a business account

Speaking of Business accounts with Dell - when trying to find a solution to my computer (and I was entertaining sending it back for a reformat of a new operating system or to see if they would take it back if I reordered) I was passed along from one Indian to the next. I finally got someone stateside in the Business Returns department. The Indians had told me I was past my 21 days and there would be a 15% restocking fee. Business returns said they don't charge their business customers and even though it was a bit over a month old, they would take it back. They sent me a pre-paid UPS label, offered a pickup (I declined since I go by the HUB everyday). I dropped it off on Thursday and Saturday I received an emailed note from Dell that they had put a credit on my Visa for the full amount - and this is BEFORE they recieved it back.

I have also found the computers on the Dell business site have more memory and features and are geared for small business - all for less $$$. I always purchase my computers from http://www.dell.com/biz.

Thanks all for your help.

Re: My husband and I bought new Dells

I know what you mean. I bought a business Dell and never had too many problems. My girlfriend bought a personal Dell and they loaded it with so much garbage and things they wanted you to spend more money on. She has never been able to clear those things off her computer, even the Geek Squad couldn't help her. Dell figures that if you buy a personal computer from them that you are inexperienced and they can stick it to you. I would never deal with them again.

WOW! Thanks for sharing that gold nugget!

I have both a Dell desktop and laptop, neither of which I've been impressed with. I didn't know about the business computers and it sounds as if it's what I need.

Re: Good News - Gotta Love Dell - not me...

Have not bought any Dell computers for anyone since they refused to back a $100 rebate that was earned as part of an order for a Christmas gift. I was concerned about ordering early as the rebate info said it needed to be sent in within 30 days. But, when contacting them was told to order now (in November) as they could not guarantee delivery by Christmas if the order was delayed and promised that because it was a Christmas gift the rebate would not be a problem if it was sent in within 30 days of Christmas. It arrived Mid-November and sat until Christmas Day when it was opened and set up. The needed rebate info was returned to me and sent to Dell in early January.

None of the persons at various levels of Dell would back the $100 rebate - they said the Dell sales employee should not have told me that I would have more time than indicated. I cannot say anything positive about the company.

for future reference...

If anyone is interested in buying older software -- or nearly any other piece of technology -- try this website: http://www.pricewatch.com/. It's kind of a clearing house for internet tech sales. You can find practically anything and can have it sort by cost, if you choose.
