People are amazing...
Just got a call a few minutes ago for general notary work - lady wants 2 VIN Verifications done - "how do you do that and what is your fee?" - told her how and my fee of $50 which, to me, was fair as it only included the 2 Verifications (we can charge $20 per) and a $10 travel fee - too much - sheriff will come out and do it.... so call the sheriff for God's sake!! I just still don't understand people who want/need this service (not talking loan signings here) and don't think they have to pay...yeesh..
Okay..I feel better for now..

I have one for you: Mom is terminally ill and nearing end of life. Daughter (in NY) hires me to execute Will and POA w/mom. That means picking it up from Atty, driving to mom and spending an hour trying to waker her up. Go back the next day when she's alert, executing docs, delivering back to Atty. For a whopping $150. Daughter THEN calls me and asks if I will do a VIN Verification on both the auto AND a title transfer for the manufactured home. Yes, for another $150. Mom cannot find either title. "Can you go look for it?" WTF? Where? Rummage through the old lady's stuff while Hospice is doing their thing? What the hades is wrong with people????

That's so sad Lisa...
When my mom was ill my brother, sister and I went to her home in FL to take care of things before she passed away. (I'm in California and my brother and sister are in New Jersey) One of my brother's live with her, but he's got issues and couldn't take care of the medical and legal matters.
I can't picture telling a stranger to go thru my mom's things to find something. That boggles my mind. And that poor mom. You would think the daughter would care enough to personally go to her mom's to be with her and help her.
I hope my kids care enough about me when I reach that point in my life to want to be with me and help me.

Yes, it is sad. What is sadder is when you attempt to tell your child where everything is and they just say, " I don't want to discuss it. You're not going anywhere yet."
I have a drawer in my file cabinet that is dedicated to important stuff only. I don't mean photos, negatives, jewelry kind of stuff, but keys to everything that has a lock, will, codicil, gift list, bills, banks, ira's, insurance, passwords on computer - things that make my life move. My death needs to move along quickly as well. If it isn't in one spot, they would have to search and inconvenience means missing something possibly.

In my box I also keep car titles and an envelope with $$ cash. With the cash is a letter requesting that within a week of my burial, that money be used at XXX bar to buy the house and raise a toast to me. Then get on with your life !!!!!

I've had several 'general notarization' calls where the caller is quite miffed that I want to charge anything at all.... after all, "the state pays you". Where do they get these ideas? And, no, they're not all Arkie natives, either... so stop laughing

ROFL...never gave that a thought Lee
Haven't had anyone tell me yet that I get paid by the state...makes me wonder if these people go into the grocery store and expect food for free - or free gas at the gas station...good God.

I received a call several weeks ago from a woman asking me if I performed wedding ceremonies. I said yes I do. She then asked what I charged and I quoted the allowable fee and then added that, depending on where it is to take place, I would have to charge a travel fee. She then asked me if I would be willing to go to the Federal Prison to perform the ceremony? I told yes but for a notary to get into the Federal Prison, the notary has to be cleared and it takes two to three weeks for this to happen. She said, Oh, I didn't know that. Are you sure? So I told her the story of my notary friend who was commissioned to go to the same Federal Prison to notarize a single page document and what the signing service went thru to just get her thru the door. Needless to say, I haven't heard from her since (and the wedding was supposed to be today).

I have never heard of being paid by the state. How cool is that? Maybe we make big bucks too.

Yes, People truly are amazing. I am in Northern Louisiana. People here expect to pay $5 for acknowledgements. My fees start at $10, which is less than the local banks. They charge $25. Some people come into my office and when I tell them my fee, they say "I didn't bring any money."
Go figure. And I thought these idiots were only in Lousiana.
