Weight limit for FedEx envelopes

I was dropping off a package to FedEx Kinkos on Saturday, loan docs of about 90 pages. They were in a regular legal size envelope. Guy behind the counter looks at it and says I can't send the package because it weights more than 1/2 pound so it must go in the FedEx Pak instead. He weights it, it's over a pound. So according to this guy, any loan package with more than 40 -50 pages has to go in a FedEx Pak even though 100 - 120 pages fits comfortably in a standard legal envelope. After thousands and thousands of FedEx deliveries, this is news to me. Anyone ever had a delivery issue sending a normal size package in a standard legal envelope?

Yep, same thing, except I was told that over a pound it must go in the Pak.
So....I never drop with a person, lol. Always in a drop box.
My last closing package sent via Fed Ex weighed in at a hefty 3.0 lbs. per the tracking info.
But, it all fit, and the co. I worked with explicitly says they want them sent in a legal envelope.

No...and one title co. requires the legal reusable cardboard env. or they 'fine' you. Some days it's a real challenge cramming docs into those.

Yep, Lee....and with those I always have to tape them shut, because they just won't seem to stay closed. Very challenging.

Yet one more reason not to be "the shipper".

After several attempts by UPS to have me pay fines, etc., I stopped putting my name and address as the shipper. The firm that requests my services is always the shipper now.

Some people put the receiver's name and address as the shipper also.

As for using a drop box, IMHO that's A Bad Idea. I want a receipt showing that the package left my hands. That's why I have developed a relationship with the local pack-and-ship store. No receipt == _you_ lost the package.

But some of us don't.
And pack and ship costs the company an extra buck or two.
My regulars would have a fit if I lacked the respect to incur more costs for them.
Only once did I use a pack and ship store, and they "forgot" to send off the package for several days.
I choose a drop box almost every time...even when I go to a Fed Ex Kinkos I_use_the_drop_box.
What is with all those underscores in place of a space? lol

I use the FedEx Sturdy Pak. It is simply an expandable legal size envelope and I cannot see a weight limit on it. It's perfect for the size and amount of our docs.

States right on the envelope -

"Eight ounces ... up to 24 pages" BUT then it says "If it exceeds the ...limit, a higher rate will apply."

Doesn't say you can't USE the envelope, only that a higher rate will be charged.

Re: States right on the envelope -

I out it all in the envelope and then I put it in a pack so it doesn't get bumped the $10.00 fine. I had a gal at Fed Ex-Kinkos show me that. It has worked every time.

I did not hit enter!

Freakin' 'puters. I was trying to say of course the rates would be more for a heavier package. I've never once had a recipient state that they were getting over charged for using the wrong envelope, so the heck with it, I'm not going to worry about it.

I always use Fedex Express legal envelopes (never paks). I know that even the online Fedex shipping system allows only a 1 lb. limit for envelopes. I was also told it has to do with rates.
I know many I send go 2 & 3 lbs. & they can charge the recipient accordingly. I haven't had any reported problems.

Actually, the "limit" for the legal size envelope is 8 ounces. It even states that right on the envelope: "If the gross weight of the contents, FedEx Envelope, and airbill exceeds eight ounces, the next higher rate will apply. Eight ounces is approximately 24 8½"x14" pages."

There is no weight limit when the SturdyPak is used, since the cost is based on the actual weight (raised to the nearest whole pound). You can view/download the rates at FedEx.com.
