"It's only 16 miles
from your house" I hear this statement from a lot of ss that are not aware of the lay of the land up here in northern California I inform them it may state 16 miles but it takes an hour to reach the signing. Sixteen miles as the crow flies and my car doesn't have wings! Whopping offer of 75.00 edocs Reverse Mortgage!! Will call if my fee of $$$ is acceptable. Think I'll go fly my kite instead

We have the same situation here in the Seattle area with Puget Sound right smack dab in the middle of our geography....a 16 mile "as the crow flies" can turn into a 4 hour signing because of the ferry boat requirement (over and back) to get from one edge of the Sound to the other. Pricing structures should be: 1 set/2set of docs, edocs, faxbacks, and then time. We are very far away from this equation factoring into the fee.
I turn down most of these requests I receive because of the time....not the distance.

You'd think they'd realize that 1 size fits NOBODY.
Same situation...different variables. Mountains, lakes, lots of gravel roads... no freeways for 3 hours in any direction--all 2 lane roads. "Time" is the biggest deal-breaker.

"Only 16 miles" for me can be right thru the middle of L.A. So depending on the time of day that could be 30 mins to 2 hours... If only we had wings. Most people don't think I'm quite that angelic.

The ones I love ..
are the ones that what ever mileage map program they are using, is telling them that it is only 16 miles miles, but it is actually 65 miles of mountain drivng. I think the program is mapping it as if we are crows and can fly. I always know which signing site they got my name off of. I have tried calling and talking to the owner regarding that the program is way off, he is aware of it, but has never done an update. Even Google and Mapquest are much better to the truth.

Same in Maui!
And not only does it take awhile to get to places in Maui, no freeways here, the gas is $4.40 a gallon! Mileage is worse on these two lane roads.... Distance on the maps is not accurate most of the time. My regulars are learning and I am teaching others how it is here. We are definately a unique geographic location in Hawaii.
The funniest are when it is on a different island..oh..it is only 50 miles.....across the ocean!! Gotta fly or take a boat.... "So you cannot do this signing in a couple of hours then?" =-) Hehehe.

Re: Same in Maui!
I do go to other islands. I usually only to to Lanai and Molokai, both also in Maui County, because Oahu, the Big Island and Kauai have enough notaries to cover it. Lanai has only 1 mobile notary and 2000 people and Molokai has none, and 6000 people. I haven't done in a couple of months. Most lenders now won't pay me for it. Also, flights have gone up since ALOHA and ATA shut down. It is actually kind of fun to go to those islands. I take a 9 seater prop plane there...15 minute flights. Nice change of pace, but usually an all day thing going there and back. I think it may become cheaper to fly to another island than to drive soon with the cost of gas at $4.40 a gallon now and going up!
ALOHA!

Aloha Christine,
Good to hear from you and hope to someday visit your beautiful state.
We have some mountain here that are blank spots on the map and one of our favorite sayings is " you can't get there from here" Maybe these companies should start traning birds to do their signings or only hire helicoptor pilots. Do you know any pilots that would do a signing for $45? I know a LOT of companies that would love to give them a call.

I turn down a lot that require me to go through Boston during rush hour. They always say well its only about 45min from you, BUT factor in traffic and you are easily talking 3 hrs plus just driving. Got a call today that was 1hr & 50min from me.... WHAT!!!!!!

Re: "It's only 16 miles - ONE WAY
That's 32 miles, unless, of course, you're also insisting that I move in with the borrower ......
