Refer to your 2008 CA handbook.
And if you can't find the answer there, call the CA SOS.

And stop doing signings
until you know your notary basics. Any halfway competent notary should know what forms of ID are acceptable without having to ask.

Re: And stop doing signings
Thank You for being so rude but the book did not cover consular cards. I did check with someone a little more helpfull and found out no u can not use this tipe of card which is a mexican government id card. only if it was a drivers license.

Re: And stop doing signings
"...the book did not cover consular cards."
The book explained exactly what the requirements are. A form of ID either meets the requirements or it doesn't. It's not reasonable for them to list evderything that does NOT meet the requirements because that would be too long a list and would surely leave something out. It's our responsibility as notaries to be able to interpret what is written and make appropriate judgments from that information. If you can't do that, maybe you should take Calinotary's advice. I'm sorry if this sounds harsh, but I feel it's the truth. We're dealing with very important documents to those involved and potential major liability to you.
Also, that very topic has been discussed here before on a number of occasions. A search of this board might have answered your question for you.

909 some others have been just a bit confused with regards to that card.
I know how sorry Janet is about the harshness of the judgments
And as usual, and true to form, instead of ignoring a question that frustrates, some want to beat you up.
You are in good company

The sole purpose of a notary public is to properly identify somebody according to the laws of their state. So when a notary doesn't know how to do that, yeah, I think they deserve to be beat up. Especially when they're already out there doing signings.
It's not like the CA handbook is vague about which documents are acceptable, they're quite explicit about it (the use of credible witnesses is another story). If a person doesn't know what they can and can't use as ID, and doesn't even know how to look up the information without help, then they have no business being a notary because they obviously don't know how to do the job.
If she were a surgeon asking if she could use a steak knife in the operating room it would be crystal clear, this is really no different.

If you like to "beat up" anyone for asking a question, good for you.
im sure it works well in your life.
This poster asked about a certain i.d. I have known some to not understand what that card is, so the question was fine. \if you dont know the difference between being a notary and being a surgeon im worried about you

in answer to your question Proper identification is required for any notary service requiring verification of signature. California recognizes the following types of identification as valid if issued by the state within the last 5 years:
California Driver License or Commercial Driver License ID Card - Senior Identification Card, Under 18 Identification Card, California Identification Card A US passport The following types of identification are acceptable if they are current and have been issued within the last 5 years:
Driver license or ID card issued by another state Mexican or Canadian driver license issued by an authorized agency. US Military identification card Foreign passport if stamped by the Immigration and naturalization service. All identification cards must contain a photo, physical description, signature and serial number.
if none of these are available you can use credible witness as well
here is the CA handbook
http://www.sos.ca.gov/business/notary/notary_hdbk.pdf is the electronic book for Ca, if you need a bit of a refresher on these types of questions
