FYI: CA Notaries -- SOS is processing applications from...

people who took the exam on 9/25. That's the current status.

I just had to call over there for another reason entirely and the lady happened to tell me that. So, for new notaries... it looks like the backlog is easing a bit. Of course, for renewing notaries you still won't get your commission until you have about 30 days left... so instead of 4-5 months advance, it seems to be easing to 3-4 (though I'd still get in there about the 4-6 month range, anyway!)

Guess I better go down and submit my fingerprints, grrrrrr! They haven't changed since the last time if gave them samples...... I guess they must have (I hope) their investigative process better refined to weed out the miscreants.

Well, that's good news. It's discouraging to students to have the period 3-4 months.

They received my name change notice August 15 (I have certified receipt). I have yet to receive my updated commission. I called in September and was told that they were working on the May name changes at that time, and she offered to put mine through right away if I wanted to resend it.

Since I just renewed my commission in February and purchased all new stamps, etc. I am waiting until they process it normally so I don't have to purchase new stamps again yet. I can still notarize docs with the old name, so I am in no hurry. At least I sent it in timely. Oddly enough, they processed the change of address right away. Hmmmmmmm

You have to change the name on your Surety Bond and re-file the amended bond with the county clerk within 30 days or the commission will not go into effect and will become void.

The amended commission will not go into effect until the oath and amended bond are on file and the notary seal must be obtained with 30 days of filing.

The commission number and expiration date will be the same.

Yes, I am perfectly aware of all of that.

But - and it's a BIG BUT - I can't do anything until I receive my updated commission. My point was that they are 6 months behind on sending out amended commissions with name changes.
