Live Scan Fingerprints question:

I have just received my email from the SOS that I passed my notary exam. But I haven't received anything by mail. Can I schedule an appt to go and do my livescan? In the email it says to bring the completed live scan form, Am I going to get that by mail or where do I get that? Online? Thank you. Also one more little thing,
I have started checking my blood in my fingertips because of possible high blood sugars. Does that affect in any way the way my fingerprint will come up?

You won't get anything in the mail. The email *IS* you notification that you passed. Congratulations.

The livescan form is available on the SOS's website at:

http://www.sos.ca.gov/business/notary/forms/notary_livescan.pdf

You do not necessarily have to make an appointment for livescan. It depends on where you go. The list is available here:

http://ag.ca.gov/fingerprints/publications/contact.htm

I just picked one that happened ot be a walk-in service on a Saturday. It was quick and easy. Be sure to bring cash. Most likely it will cost about $71-$80 or so.

The fingerprints should be fine, even with the punctures. There are a couple of people who have reported problems but I think that's fairly rare.

Finally, within just a few hours you can check the status of your prints. Just call 916-227-4557, and have your copy of the form the livescan operator gives you. You'll need the ATI number they write on the form. Amazingly enough, the results of the livescan is reported to the SOS extremely quickly in most cases. The SOS, however, will then take up to several months to finish the process, mostly because of a backlog. I know that the check I wrote months ago to the SOS for the exam still hasn't cleared. I figure once the check clears I know they've finally looked at my paperwork. I'm not worried, though.

I prick my fingers also and there was not effect pon the fingerprints. I do however, have one finger print that does not show up and they took it about 10 times before giving up and accepting. The SOS will not notify you of anything until at earliest 30 days before your current commission is up. I just got mine on 11/14 and my commission is up on 12/10.

How long did it take you Mary from the day you submit the live scan to actually getting your commission?

It doesn't matter when you do the livescan so long as it is done and back at the SOS before they process your application -- which is based on the date you took your exam. For most people, as long as you do your fingerprints as soon as you find out you pass, it should not be an issue. If you have a criminal history or the FBI likes to reject your prints (as happened to one here) because they can't be read properly, that's a different story.

You'll know by calling that automated number what the status is. When I had my prints done on a Saturday at 11am, both the DOJ and FBI had their results back to the SOS withing 3 hours.... on a Saturday!

Like I said, the fingerprints are usually quick, it's the results of the prints and how long the SOS is taking to process applications that is the real kicker. What you want to make sure is that they have EVERYTHING ready to go and process when your "number" comes up.

Sorry, it took so long to reply. I submitted everything by 6/01/08. I did submit my fingerprints a month after I took the test.

Thank you sooo much for your detailed answer! I have an appt at the local police dept. for tomorrow.

The Sec of State doesn't look at your application until your fingerprints are taken and sent up to the Sec of State. My advice is to have your fingerprints taken the day of the test.

One interesting point: if you don't get over to the County Clerk's Office (or do it my registered or certified mail) in the 30 day period you are given, you must submit a new application and every time you submit an application form you have to have your fingerprints taken.

Fun!
