Notary Identification
Hi Everyone -- I am on my 3rd - four year term as a Notary in the State of Maryland.
I have had people ask - Why notaries don't have a special ID identifying them so that the resident knows that you are a valid Notary Public.
Since 9/11 I have heard this mentioned to me several times.
Are there any other states doing something about this?
Thank you,
Chris Smithson

So far, I don't know of any other states who require notaries to have standard issue ID. I do jail work in Santa Barbara county, and all the desk duty clerks require for me to prove my id is 1) current drivers license and I have no outstanding warrants, and 2) my notary seal.
I've had a couple of borrowers ask to see my drivers license. I show it willingly, I let them record the number if they want to, seems harmless, since I'm asking to see theirs and recording same in my journal.
Shhhhh....you might give the NNA an idea about selling Notary id cards to us, although I did carry my membership card around in my wallet, it's another confirmation that you are a notary in good standing.
After the terrorist attack in Mumbai, India, I think we'll be seeing a bigger rush (already happening in England) toward one standard ID for all of us to be able to travel across borders and get on airplanes.

AZ has ID cards, they are issued by the DMV, not the SOS., they are generally given out to those that cannot drive and need some proof of identification.

Maine has the same type of ID issued by DMV for non-drivers.

I have an ID card that was given to me after I recorded my commission in Ohio.
"This is to Certify that Claudine C. Osborne is a Notary Public and her commission is recorded in the Lake County Clerk of Courts office "
It also states which volume and page that my commission is recorded. This ID has a seal on it and my signature it has no picture and is the size of a credit card.

I'd love to have an ID card issued by our SOS
I e-mailed them a few months ago about this - they never responded...guess they didn't like my idea..

I replied to a this issue several months ago. I think we should have a picture id if everyone is serious about preventing fraud. Anyone can call themselves a notary and make up a bogus seal. Id cards can be bogus too, but a secure photo id for notaries provides another layer of protection.

I take extremely ugly pictures but......
I have a badge made for me by someone in Florida that I will flash when asked. It is very impressive. Forgot who made it for me 5 years ago.

I think that will be called "Passport" - kinda like the commonist countries, and many others, who require identity papers of ALL citizens at ALL times...there is no 'forgetting' your wallet in places.

I am a Maryland Notary and carry a copy of my commission in my briefcase. Some ask to see my drivers license as confirmation but this is very rare that BO ask for anything. The company usually tells BO who is coming so when you make contact prior to appt. they are at ease.

I show a copy of my title producers license if asked for ID. Have only been asked twice.

Arkansas issues a wallet card. Not anything really special...has the State seal, my name, home county & term dates. No photo; no commission number (but I expect that will change when I renew as they started actually issuing numbers a while back).

I think that's actually a pretty decent idea. I have a copy of my commission certificate scaled down. One is scaled to a fit my classic size Franklin Planner, the other the size of a wallet card. That's really the only "official" documentation they give us.
Interestingly enough, California just started (in 2008) requiring us to submit a passport photo with our applications. I suppose they match the photo to our DL photo...but who really knows. It would be nice to have something like that... I can't imagine it would cost all that much to supply them, and I'd willingly pay extra in my application fee to cover the cost.
New York DOES issue ID cards: http://www.dos.state.ny.us/lcns/ntryfaq.html

It would be so easy for the state to issue ID cards since we already have to send in a picture with our application. All they have to do is make one up and send it back with the commission. Simple enough.

I would love to see a notary ID card. We don't have anything like that in VA. This might be an issue for the national organizations, since they do so much lobbying.

Just an Idea ...... the DMV could issue ID's mentioning Notary on our ID...... since DMV's are already looking into the credentials .... they could get in touch with the commission office and verify the info. and issue a new ID card .... seems easy.

Louisiana has ID cards for Notary Commissions but
I don't think they are that effective since there is no photo. It does have our names and commission numbers but no photos. Since we are commissioned for life and our commissions don't expire, I guess our photos would eventually become outdated....
