Well, I suggest you read EVERYTHING in the VA Notary handbook FIRST:

http://www.commonwealth.virginia.gov/OfficialDocuments/Notary/2008NotaryHandBookrev0808.pdf

Familiarize yourself with the laws and the rules.

After that Click on the Notary 101 tab above, select Virginia and follow the directions. Virginia is one of the (ridiculously) easiest states in the US to obtain a commission. But, just because it's easy doesn't mean you don't have the responsibility to know the handbook back and forth. As for supplies, you'll want a seal and a journal at the very minimum whether required by VA law or not. The rest is up to you.

Good advice above. It also depends on what you intend to do with your notary commission. Most (but not all) of the discussion on this board has to do with loan document signing. If you intend to try to get into that arena, there is much more than you need to learn and your needed supplies will be much greater. I say "try" because there aren't that many loans being generated these days. As mentioned, msg 33325 will cover all of that and more.

1) a background in mortgage lending, or hours and hours of research
2) a very, very thick skin
3) absolutely NO ego
4) a twisted personality that allows you to thrive on both a) being the best thing since sliced bread by those you're face-to-face with (borrowers) and b) being assumed to be the worst thing mascarading as human by those who blog about your so-called 'profession'
5) lots of back-up supplies of nylons, whole-grain protein bars and paper
6) a dog who doesn't have a clue when dinner time is supposed to be.
7) a sense of humor!

Loved the response.

Perhaps you could have added an outsize bladder to the requirements.

Though I have to say, I've encountered little use for nylons over the years.

lol I tossed out the nylons years ago, I am convinced a man invented those devices of torture. But I would add: a cheap portable copier from Ebay, ability to withstand long periods of pet adoration, the patience of a saint, and a family willing to watch you pull your hair out as the printer eats the docs you were supposed to have received hours ago and support you as you run out the door with dinner half cooked on the stove.....all that being said, I love this job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
