Backing out of a job.
I was asked to do a closing tonight later than my normal time. At 10 p.m. So right now it is 9 p.m. and still no docs. It will take me 25 to get to my destination and it is not in an area I am used to. Realistically, it will be 11:30 at least before I get there. What do you think? I told the loan officer I am not comfortable going into their home that late and I was told it was at 10 p.m. Help please.

Simple. Call the loan officer, tell him that you're not willing to do the signing any later than 10 and since they didn't get docs to you on time that you're unable and/or unwilling to do it. They didn't book you to wait around the entire night, they booked you for 10:00.
A friend of mine used to say "a lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part".

Well, when I am confronted with a 'late' signing, I tell them right away that if docs are not received by 'whenever', I will not be able to complete the signing.
Under your circumstances, you will probably not be able to complete the signing TODAY, because, at midnight, it's TOMORROW. There ya' go....

Once in a while you will get these. If it is from a reputable company and you are being compensated fairly, and this is a big if--alert your borrowers and go through the pkg and have them sign all notarized docs first. Plus the RTC, TIL etc THEN do the rest. That pkg is no good if they don't sign the note, and other non notarized docs. This way you will get the notarized docs signed before midnight and the borrowers are protected. This is presuming you can get there before midnight.

When business was booming it was not unusual to get these late calls on the last day of the month. There are some loans that they will push to get closed. I've heard of notaries stressing to get it done before midnight. It is a dilemna if you agreed to it, and then back out at that hour. It is always our choice, however, to say "no" to unreasonable requests.

"Realistically" if they sent your docs at 9:00 and it's a 25 minute drive you should have plenty of time to be there by 10:00. The "area" should have nothing to do with it since you knew what area it was in when you accepted the order - the same with your 'normal' time ... that has nothing to do with it ... you accepted the order. Where are the missing hours between 9:00 and 11:00 if it's a 25 minute drive time? 1/2 hour to print, 1/2 hour to drive - that's one hour not 2.5.
That said, if docs aren't sent so that you can be there at 10:00, I don't think you're under any obligation to go at 10:30 or 11:00 - the same as if it's 10:00 a.m. or 2:00 p.m.
Being flexible is a huge plus in this business ... everyone has their own tolerance levels but if you don't work when the client wants you to work, you don't gain and retain steady clients.
