OT - update on my husband

Well he saw his kidney doctor this afternoon and it is confirmed. They are getting him ready to go back on dialysis. He has to have a vein mapping done this afternoon to see where to put the new graft which will hook him up to the dialysis machine. He already has one from the last go round but that one doesn't work anymore. He will also be put back on the transplant list. Last time - almost 8 years ago it took him 2 years to get a new kidney. Hope it goes quicker this time.

I Shall Be Glad

by Grace Noll Crowell

If I can put new hope within the heart
Of one who has lost hope,
If I can help a brother up
Some difficult long slope
That seems too steep for tired feet to go,
If I can help him climb
Into the light upon the hill's far crest,
I shall begrudge no time
Or strength that I spend, for well I know
How great may be his need.
If I can help through any darkened hour,
I shall be glad indeed.

For I recall how often I have been
Distressed, distraught, dismayed,
And hands have reached to help, and voices called
That kept me unafraid.
If I can share this help that I have had,
God knows I shall be glad.

How old is your husband? And why the new kidney went bad? My dad was on dialysis<<spell?
for a few months and then he died but he was almost 78. Hope your husband will be ok.

My husband is 36 years old - his first transplant was in Nov., 2000 when he had a double transplant (kidney/pancreas) They can't guarantee how long the transplant will last but usually last about 10 years. This all stemmed from him being diabetic which he has been since he was 7 years old. He even went blind for 6 months when he was in his 20's and although they got his sight restored his right eye has since deteriorated a lot and the left eye is on its way. The big kicker is as of 1/09 he will no longer have a job with health insurance as they are outsourcing his job to an outside company. He works for a manufacturing plant where business has been very bad for them and have been laying off a lot of guys.

Don't forget the COBRA option. He should be able to keep his insurance for an addt'l 18 months from departure from the postion as long as premiums are being paid, albeit at
usually a higher rate.

Re: Mary

I know about the Cobra - unfortunately I don't know if we will be able to afford it - some guys that were laid off in April were paying $800 a month.

Good thing is he will be able to apply for disability and probably get it this time and then he will be able to get medicare because of end stage renal disease - I have to talk to the dialysis social worker tomorrow.

Re: Mary

Medicare is taking care of my husbands end stage renal disease ,I don't know what we would do if not. Cobra was not an option for us either as it was just to costly it would have been around 900.00 a month for the both of us. So now he is being taken care of , I just need to stay healthy. Don't dispair there is help, take advantage of what is out there the case worker should be able to help a lot.My thoughts are with you I know how stressful it is on you so take care of yourself also.
