fax machine
I am new to being a notary and was told that I have to have a laser fax. Is that true or can I use my inkjet?

I have only used my fax machine for faxbacks. I don't see that inkjet/laser makes any difference there. You will, of course, have to have a laser printer for printing edocs. I started out with an inexpensive single tray (you will need to print all legal that way), and then moved up to a commercial dual tray when my business grew & warranted to purchase price.

I could be wrong, but I don't think there is either a laser
or ink jet fax machine. They come plain paper or rolls of paper. I think you may have your machines mixed up. Printers are a different story. Yes, there are laser printers and ink jet printers. You need to have a laser jet to print loan documents.

There are laser and inkjet fax machines. I don't think thermal machines (roll) are still being marketed. There is a hybrid thermal that uses thermal transfer ribbons but prints on plain paper. I agree tha sending is far more important than receiving in most cases. I have received very few faxed forms for closings in the last several years.

4 different kinds to my knowledge:
I now have 4 different types of faxes: laser, inkjet, carbon copy and heat sensitive.

They have all-in-one laser printers that, of course, would print the documents using the laser printer. I have e fax, so the faxed documents are handled just like e docs. Erwin

You brought up an important point--with efax you need to be able to scan the documents to be sent.

I have received docs via fax. Sometimes they'll send the major package via edoc and say they'll fax the HUD-1 as soon as it's finished. Or other misc docs. Received 16 pgs fax of docs for BO to sign with the edocs. The all-in-one lasers are the way to go.

I use my inkjet for faxing & scanning
but you need a laser for printing loan docs. Reason is that inkjet docs can be tampered with whereas a laser burns the toner into the paper and can not be altered.

When you are out shopping you probably want to look at Brother. My HP 3050 all-in-one didn't serve to print docs because it was way too slow for that.

Welcome, where in MI are you?
You said you are new to being a notary, but a notary doesn't need to have a fax.
Are you saying you are getting into closings? If so, the reality is that the originals get scanned and then are destroyed so I don't see how an inkjet would be a problem. Just need to make sure you can print legal sized.

Ink jets are slower and more expensive to operate.
Just be aware of that.

Notaries Public rarely need laser ...
If you are providing Notary Public services you will rarely, if ever, need a laser printer or fax for your public official duties.
As stated by others, if you plan to do business as a signing agent, home inspector, or other for-profit business, it is best to have 1) at least one fax machine and 2) at least one printer (dual tray or ability to print on letter or legal) that are laser, not inkjet. Inkjet documents are not acceptable by most business for the purposes of "commercial paper"; i.e., the fully executed original is subject to desctruction by "oops, spilled water on it," dampness where it is filed, and fading over time. Of course, if it is your 30-year mortgage Note that you signed, you might prefer that the text on the signed original is unreadable within 10-15 years.

I have an HP LaserJet 3015. It is an all-in-one. It also serves as a backup in case one of my other printers quits or runs out of toner.
Many companies send additional docs by fax, so they do need to be printed on laser. As far as I know, all companies require that all docs are printed on fax.
