I have a number of friends who took the test with me, and none of us has been contacted for US Census taking. Just wondered how many people on this board were contacted/hired to participate in field operations. Census taking begins April 6, 2009.

I got a call a couple weeks ago offering me a position
as an Enumerator - I turned it down only because the only place they had an opening for the 5-day training was over 90 minutes one way....they put my name back in the pool...

Yes, I heard from the Census Bureau about three weeks ago offering a 40 hour work week as an enumerator (temporary 10-week position from April - June) at something like $16 per hour plus mileage reimbursement. It’s expected that you can work nights and weekends.
I told them that I could have committed to those hours when I applied for the job back in November, but since then I've had to make other arrangements and have gone back to school two days a week (I have a 4-hour class on Saturdays with a one-hour drive each way, so that alone is a 6-hour block of weekend time that I'm unavailable) and also due to the low interest rates, the loan signing biz is having a temporary surge.
They called again last week offering me the same position. I told them the same thing - I cannot commit to 40 hours now that it's four months later and I have made other arrangements. They said they would call me back with an offer of a part-time position, but I haven't heard from them yet.

Yes, I was as an enumerator hired two weeks ago, went through the classroom training, and will be doing final field training this afternoon. Actual work starts on April 6th. Here in San Diego they are asking for a minimum 20 hours per week with some done in early evening and some done on saturday. 40 hours a week is the max. Pay, $16.50 per hour portal to portal and $.55 per mile. Even paid for mileage and class room training at that rate.

I was also offered an Enumerator position...
...but the Administrative Meeting and training dates did not work out for me. I asked to be "returned to the pool" for later consideration.

Re: Last month I got a call for a "supervisor" position...
That was a 10 week (40 hrs. a week) position. I had to let the person know "right that minute" whether I wanted it or not. (I needed a day to juggle things around, so I couldn't accept immediately.)
A couple of weeks ago, I got a call for the enumerator position and I agreed to attend the training in the middle of April.
That is PT, 20 hours a week, at $17.73 per hour. I don't recall if they mentioned mileage reimbursement.
