A surprising new source of income from the county jail
The Deputy that provides notary services to inmates in the county jail near by has decided not to notarize real estate documents. I've done 4 short sale closings in the last month, not only that, but I have the Deputy's personal cell phone number to schedule such closings and I need to schedule another.
The first time I went was a bit nerve racking, but now that I know the contact and procedure, it's not a problem. There are a lot of incarcerated people that have homes to sale,. The Deputy now wants me to be the only notary used in the facility. Yeah me!

Good deal... take the work where you can get it, and better yet if you can get an exclusive...
I assume this is general notary work, and you don't have to walk them through the package?

You know me ... always wanting to know the big picture. What made the deputy decide not to notarize real estate documents?

Maybe because he is aware that most convicts have aliases, and the headache this could cause.

if that was his reasoning, he'd refuse ALL notarizations, not single out real estate.

He did, he got someone else to do them.

He said with the whole mortgage and real estate meltdown he was not comfortable with notarizing real estate docs because of liability issue and the lack of E&O insurance.

My thoughts exactly, Becca. Just be careful and more vigilant when working in this environment. Ask for more than one piece of ID, possibly something from home, that maybe the co-borrower/seller,( hopefully there is one),could bring to the table. I know we don 't swear to the content of the information in documents, however this population of clientele could have you inconveniently in court testifying to your extend of reasonable identification. Some of them are just too crafty, and the officer is aware this.......I'm sure you are too. Just be care, It might look/sound good on the surface, but at what cost. Just be careful.
