Background Check Required for Signings?

I just received an email from a signing company (whom I have never had any problems with), saying that they have received their first order that requires a background check. They then provide a link to the service they want their notaries to use:

https://rta.crimcheck.com/

I have never had a problem with this signing company, so I trust them, but I am wondering if others have had (or have been required to have) background checks before they can do a signing with or work for a particular company.

There's a $20 fee. (Payable by me, of course.)

It seems odd to me, too, in that -- in California, anyway -- there is a required LiveScan FBI and DOJ background check before a notary can even receive a commission, and then again with each new four year term.

Another background check seems redundant, and an unnecessary cost, but if it leads to more business, I suppose it's worth it.

Thoughts?

Rather than a long comment, I recommend using the orange "Search" button as many paragraphs of comments have been written on this site on the subject.

I personally do not have any BGC other than the one required by California and have never been asked if I have one.
