No contact from SS
Last evening I received a call from a woman that needed three forms notarized. The company that forwarded the package never contacted or negotiated with me personally. They gave her my phone number and was told to set up the app't with me. I refused by stating I had another signing to perform in the opposite direction she lived. I have read many stories about S/A getting ripped off by not getting paid for their service and efforts, I refuse to do business this way unless the SS notifies me first and we negotiate a fee.

You must be a newbie
What was offered to you was likely DIRECT NOTARY WORK on a mail-away closing. Consider these general notary work, charge accordingly. Even though it might be a few pages of a loan package, these aren't the same as a loan signing. The brw/buyer/seller (Not tc, ss or lender) pays you at the table. RESEARCH RESEARCH RESEARCH

The Illinois NP act is silent on the issue of travel fees.
"Except as provided in subsection (b) of this section (referring to immigration forms), the maximum fee is $1 for any notorial act performed" (3-104 (a)) Charging in excess of the maximum is a criminal offense. That is why I do not accept general notary work , except on a pro bono basis.

Re: The Illinois NP act is silent on the issue of travel fees.
Just because the Act doesn't mention travel or other fees, doesn't mean you can't charge for travel or other fees. As long as it is NOT part of the notarial act, it isn't illegal.

That is how I read the current statute. Bills have
been introduced to provide for travel fees (among other changes) and have been defeated.

even if its not clear as to whether or not we can
charge travel or other fees, it is perfectly legal to do unless otherwise indicated. No one is breaking any laws here.

If you were contacted to merely notarize three forms that's all you do - notarize her signature on three forms and charge for that along with travel as allowed by your state. She wasn't hiring you as a SA...you were being hired as a notary.
