Computer Advice
I want to upgrade to a new desktop before year's end. Any advice is welcome. Office Max locally has an HP5220F for $399.99 (no monitor). Any opinions on Intel vs. AMD processors? Thanks!

I've seen it for $350 at some online stores. (Don't know what shipping cost would be.) The 5220F is a good machine with ample memory (4Gb).
As for Intel vs AMD processors and chipsets ... I prefer Intel because there are more 'add on modules' that rely on the Intel chipsets. But, AMD has some speed and heat advantages with their processors. IMO, unless you're really into being a hardware geek, one's as good as the other. Be sure to compare speed (bus speed, throughput and graphic).

Try www.3btech.net, they have great computers and prices, free shipping. Quality is far better than you will get from Office Max, Office Depot, or Staples. I prefer the AMD because of the speed and doesn't seem to have the problem of overheating because they incorporate more fans on the drive and motherboard.

One user review from newegg - very favorable. A bit higher, w/shipping extra - but I really love their customer service. They knock themselves out for you.
CNET gives great reviews also- worth checking there too about what you want and why. Happy shopping!

My first AMD chip I bought in a laptop because of the price advantage. I was an Intel person before then. I had no performance expectations. I was so impressed on performance vs price that a bought a new Desktop with a 64 bit Athlon. Later I bought a laptop with a dual-core Turion 64 bit. Both have handled anything I have thrown at them. I even edit video on my desktop just as fast as my Mac buddies.
