Non-loan Signing fee
What would be a reasonable fee to charge?

Byour state-regulated notary fees, there's not enough information here to answer your question - you need to take into account:
1. What exactly are you doing? One doc? Multiple docs? Notarizations? 2. Are you printing? How much? 3. How far are you traveling for this?
I may have one tomorrow - elderly gentleman signing a deed - travel is over 50 miles one way...my quoted fee reflects that.

My fee would be dependent on what is to be signed. Once I was told that it was merely one document, however, it turned out to be a lengthy document consisting of numerous pages to be filled out by the family. I only had to notarize two pages, but....it took two hours. I got misled and asked for an increase in my fee. I was paid double.

When I do non-loan general notary work, I always tell them when I make the appointment that the documents need to be completed before we get together, except for signatures and the notary section. We don't need to be sitting around twiddling our thumbs while they fill out the document. BTW, this doesn't always work, but it helps.

Re: Non-loan Signing fee...filling docs in...
That's why I hate Structured Settlements - people always have stuff to fill out and I have to sit there - and they NEVER have anything ready for me. I got a call for one today - 30-40 pages, one set only, then fax it all back and wait for approval to send - I refused.

Shay...
Your allowed fees are mandated by your state laws, and travel fees may be also. Check with your SOS office or your state handbook - there are harsh penalties for overcharging. Please be sure you know your state notary laws!
BTW, your profile here on NotRot is still empty. Put some information about your business in there and give people a reason to contact you!!
Also, strongly recommend you acquire E&O insurance; available here on NotRot under the "Supplies" tab.

Your state sets the fee - check with them first.
You can charge more for mileage but even that's regulated...at least in maryland it is.
