POA for inmate
Does anyone know what the protocol is for going to a jail to notarize a POA for an inmate?

My local jail doesn't allow it. They weren't nice about it either. Apparently they have staff that will notarize for inmates whenever they happen to get around to it.

I've never done it but I think you have to check with the facility to find out their protocol. Also, make sure your signer's going to have acceptable ID. You can search here - it's been discussed before.

Re: In CA, prison ID is acceptable ID - I know
but I seem to recall someone posting here about going to a jail and is the wristband acceptable (signer had no other ID) - that's why I mentioned it...

Dept. of Corrections ID yes but the SOS says no to the wristband commonly found in county jail. In Orange county the main jail may get the inmates DL but at Theo Lacy they are very difficult to deal with. I will only go there if the person requesting the service has the inmates ID or brings 2 CWs.

I did a signing like that for in inmate in the local jail. In my case, I went twice for the same guy actually. The first time I met his attorney there and his realtor. He was doing a POA as well as selling a property and getting some banking stuff in order. The second time I met him there alone. The jail produced an ID for me that just had his photo and name on it and gave me a copy. I put that in my journal. I must say it was nerve wracking. This guy had done some bad things so it was a bit scary. Every jail I am sure is very different. Ours is just a county jail in Maui so it is probably more relaxed than many. They did ask for my ID of course when I arrived and they will need to know why you are there. The arrangements for the time had also been prearranged by his attorney with the jail. Even though we had an appointment we did have to wait a bit too while they got him to us. I would give yourself ample time for it as there is protocol and more time than normal involved. Oh yeh, and dress conservative. I am a woman so they require us to cover up and if you don't meet the dress requirements you cannot get in. You should make sure you know there guidelines for that as well. Good luck!:-)

I have done about twelve of these. Time consuming but easy for the jails three I been too. San Quentin, county detention facilities, all very just a little bit. send me an email address or contact via PM and I'll answer your questions. James
