PayPal chargeback or reversals - opinions/experience?

I noticed a few threads recently making reference to companies reversing or "taking back" the money they send through PayPal. I frequently collect payments via PayPal from companies and occasionally (maybe 10 times per year) I'm paid this way from a signing service. (Usually this is only when they can't find someone else and they're desperate enough to pay my full fee up-front). So far, no one has ever reversed the payments. There have even been a couple of notoriously "bad" companies who I've dealt with this way, but they've never cheated me or tried to yank the money back either.

I know people say that PayPal payments can be reversed, but has this actually happened to anyone here? My own personal experience has taught me that this isn't something I really need to worry about, but I'd like to hear what others have to say about it.

This is a good post, Mike. I know there are a lot of sceptics. I've been paid by PayPal & never had anyone reverse the transaction. Why would they bother, after all?????? Personally, I think it's great to be paid COD. I wouldn't have a problem if every company paid that way---yeah, in a perfect world.

I've never had a "signing" payment through PayPal, much less having it reversed. However, I have had other payments (for other goods or services) that the 'buyer' did reverse. It took a couple of months to get them settled, in the mean time, I was 'short' the payment.

If a company has a history of non-payment, or substantial problems with getting paid, it doesn't make any difference to me if they pay by check or PayPal. I will still have my reservations and skepticism. I will accept ACH and wire transfers though, as long as I get either a confirmation from my bank that funds have been deposited, or a confirmation from the sending bank that a transfer has been initiated. Of course, fees are adjusted to cover the expense of the transfer charged by my bank or PayPal.

I have been paid for NSA work and never had chargeback. Only time I had a chargeback was with a consumer purchase.
