Re visiting accepting funds at the table w/question

First off I would never take cash at the table. However I have excepted checks. What I have always done is staple the check to the signature page of the HUD Satement. Then I make a photo copy of the 2 stapled together and leave it with the borrowers. So now we will be getting a new HUD with no signature line. I need choose another signature page to staple the check to. Any suggestion. TIA

I put the check on the top of the stack of docs and clip em with a binder clip. If they send em with a rubber band instead of a binder clip, I staple the check to the top page of the stack of docs. That's it. In almost 7 years of doing this, I've never had a single problem doing it this way.

I would suggest not STAPLING the check to the HUD. It can tear in the handling of docs and make the check un-cashable when it goes thru the MICR reader at bank.

I have #10 evelopes that are HIDEOUS in color - kind of makes you nauseous. But NO ONE forgets seeing the envelope, which I clip to HUD RIGHT ON TOP of all the docs. I write in HUGE Black letters, CHECK ENCLOSED.

In 6 years, no checks have been lost, but many have complained about my color choice. Too bad, I am not changing the color since it means checks do not get lost.I am looking for hideous stickers now to go with my naueous envelopes - need to change it up a little for 2010.

I cannot tell you how many lost checks we have had on signings by other notaries, because the notary just throws it loosely in with the docs. And when you ask them, they always say it is with the docs, but they did not take the time to attach it in any fashion. Same things with voided checks for wires - just throw in the envelope and expect that it will get to its destination.

I don't staple checks to anything.

If the TC has provided a form asking the borrowers how they want their funds disbursed I will tape their voided check to the form when they want a wire transfer. If no disbursement form is in the package I use a binder clip and clip it on top of the stack of docs.

If I am collecting funds from the borrower, I place it in an envelope and write the borrower's name and the file # on it along with BORROWERS FUNDS and binder clip it on top of the docs.

I like the ulgy envelope thing. If it is big enough a person could staple it to a signature page and not staple into the check. Tks lots.

Staples can make tears in whatever doc it's stapled to....particularly with a big old envelope hanging off it. UGLY envelope is a good idea.... as is writing B's name & Loan #---just in case they get separated 'in the mail room'. But, I've had noticable envelopes lost, too.

Now I staple. And I kinda like saying "See that staple mark? That's where the check was--what did you do with it?" Nothing seems to be the perfect answer.

I use an off color enevlope write on the envelope that bos funds enclosed with their name on it and attach it to the top of the stack of docs with a paper clip or binder clip. Never had an issue.

Lee you said it much better then I did. I always have borrowers do the stapling so they have the memory of doing. That way they can't say the Notary did the stapling ? with the check because they did the ? with the check. I still love the ugly envelope thing :o)

Like you I have used this method for many years.

Mine are "very" bright canary yellow #10 envelopes. I ran them through the printer to pre-print the basics: *** DO NOT DISCARD *** , Contains Funds Due, Then a line for bo name and loan#.

This way if it does happen to fall on the floor or get lost in the pile on someone's desk they know where it belongs.

I have never lost one and have gotton nice replies back via email.

Thanks for the tip about using colored envelopes--that's a great idea, Gina.

I use an envelope, place on top and NEVER staple

And the idea that Huds won't have signature lines/pages anymore is not founded - but that's another subject.

stock up on bright red envelopes at Christmas

I write "check enclosed" on the bright red envelope and put it on top of docs. Never had one missed yet. I take the envelope with me to the closing so that I don't forget to collect the check.
