HP Tners (53a) - Are those "compatible" cartridges any good

and, can you burn a hole in them to refill?

I "killed" one printer the first time I used a compatible. I haven't had the printer fixed yet however, I've used compatibles in my new (replacement) printer. So, the choice is yours. Usually, my printer makes more noise when I don't use original cartridges! I stock many of both.

I use only remanufactured "compatible" cartridges which I get from LD Products/4 Inkjets (same company, actually). I couldn't bear the cost of new cartridges (substantially more in price). I've only had a couple of "defective" cartridges, which they replaced immediately. Some refill the cartridges. Keep in mind with HP the "drum" component is in the cartridge.

Re: What do you mean "....... HP the "drum" component is in the.

With HP, the 'drum' (see http://computer.howstuffworks.com/laser-printer2.htm) is an integral part of the toner cartridge. This is one reason that HP cartridges are more expensive than others, such as Brother, where the drum is another consumable that must be purchased separately when it fails. Having a new drum each time you insert a new cartridge, contributes significantly to the high reliability and long life HP printers enjoy.

HP cartridges can be refilled just like other brands, about 4 to 6 times. The drum should last that long before you get smeared printing as the drum wears out.

Do you have to bring the cartridges somewhere to get refill

or can you do it yourself?

DIY - do search here, many have discussed

who they use and how they do it. Popular subject...many different suppliers.

Fascinating subject - all kinds of reasons to do or not to do. #1 for: Save $$ - big bucks if over course of year and you are busy at all.
