ID? Check the Freezer!
I really enjoy this work. As corny as it sounds, I love meeting new people and learning a little about them. Last night it was time for me to check the Borrowers' ID. The wife jumped up from the table and started digging in the freezer. I figured she was hungry and was thinking to myself, "It would be nice if she would go get the ID cards before she fixed herself something to eat". Well, surprise, surprise! She came back to the table with passports, birth certificates and other important papers. Yep! She stores them in the freezer. When she noticed that her husband had given me his SSN card, she asked him where he got it from. When he responded his wallet...well....she lectured him on his carelessness and told him to put it in the freezer when I had finished with it. I just sat there grinning and when she asked me what I thought about her storing her documents in the freezer, all I could say at the time was..."cool". : )

Maybe in case of a fire? That's the only thing I can think of. Did she ever tell you why or was your response of cool the best answer? Thats kind of a "cool" idea.

Protection!
From fire is one good reason. Another is theft. With home invasions on the rise, keeping valuable information stored in the freezer, not only protects if from fire, but also from being stolen.
Many insurance companies will recommend keeping important documents "on ice". Documents such as passports and Social Security cards immediately come to mind. But also things like birth certificates, marriage license, etc.
I do like the idea of keeping credit cards embedded in a block of ice. Really "cool" idea and just may reduce credit buying habits.

Re: Protection!
I do it myself Paul. It's a lot cheapier then a safe deposit box. How cheap is that. lol The only thing I carry is $20 in cash and one debt card for gas.
Happy New Year Paul

Lol! Years ago I had a friend who used to freeze her credit cards in a plastic container filled with water. Her theory was if she had to wait for it to thaw out gave her time to "Think" before she used it for something she really didn't need. Pretty smart idea and very "cool"
Everyone have a great day!

Re: ID? Check the Freezer! MAYBE NOT
I watch the "court" tv channels and some of the "history" channel stuff and every so often they show the average person places NOT to hide valuables. Places that all the crooks look and among them were, cookie jars, under the mattress, in a shoe box in your closet and YES, in the freezer. Seems that has been a well used hiding place for years and crooks DO check it out. I wonder if a thief came to rob this homeowner, checked the freezer and found all these ID's that can be used now in identity theft as well as credit card theft if their response, upon locating it all, would be "COOL" too.

Re: ID? Check the Freezer! MAYBE NOT
Good point Tess/ME.
I've been told "if they want it , they will find it" After the bad guys get past my home security system and two very large dogs. lol I just pray that they (the bad guys) clean that darn freezer out for me. It's just jammed full in the winter months just in case we get snowed in. When the bad guys finish that they can feel free to clean the basement, closets and if they have time Please clean that garage out. Just kidding Tess
Tess have a great day!

Spencer's gifts used to sell these cool little cannisters with name brands on the outside, like Minute Maid OJ, etc. for keeping valuables in the freezer. They looked just like the real thing.

Bad, bad idea
When my house burned in 2000, they took the fridge, and stand alone freezer to the dump without allowing me to open them. Theyb said that the smell would make you extremely ill. The bad part was, I had just stocked up with about $400 worth of meat at Costco. Good thing for insurance!

OMG you have WAY better services ...
Back many years ago, I bought 1/2 a cow and put it in the freezer, which was in the garage. I was pregnant, and then got very ill for weeks in August (i.e. heat wave & several major t-storms). After about 3 weeks, ready to cook something again, I went out there to the freezer and opened it ...
What was it like? I can't describe it - the smell was almost like a solid wall that hit you. Well, I called the city to find out how to get them to come take the vile, oozing thing AWAY, and they said "Sure, after you empty it." I burst into tears (hey, pg ... what can I say). They did come with a front end loader and dumped it themselves, but it took a lot of crying ...
You got lucky, Rengel ...
