Near disaster

I had two back-to-back closings on Friday and I took my dog with me to ride in the car (and stay in the car, of course, during the closings). After the first closing, and while still at the table, I put the documents in a Fed Ex Pak, then put the Pak between the driver's seat and center console while I went in for the second closing.

When I came out of the second closing, I looked for the Pak as I was then going to the Fed Ex box and it wasn't there. I thought, OMG, the dog has chewed-up the documents. I looked in the back seat and they weren't there, and then I looked in the cargo area of my SUV, and they were there with the Pak ripped off! The documents were a bit "dog-earred" on one corner, but, otherwise OK.

Needless to say, "Oreo", my 80 lb. Dalmation X Pit Bull, will not be riding to any more closings where I will be leaving documents in the car!

That was a close call, Lynn.

I've heard the excuse "the dog ate my homework" but I've never heard it used by a signing agent. I'm so glad your dog either got distracted and turned his attention elsewhere, or realized he was going to get in a lot of trouble.

Yikes! Lynn I bet you almost had a heart attack. Glad that it worked out well for you. Like you I take both my dogs with me at night. Not that they are attack dogs I just feel safer. They have never damaged anything. They just lay down and sleep until I come back. No one has ever even noticed them.

I have a Jeep so I put my shipping envelopes in the area where the spare tire is stored when you lift the "back floor" cover it's like another truck to store items. Your SUV should have something similar in the very back behind the seats. Lynn try taking one of Oreo's favorite toys or blanket with you he just got a little anxious waiting for you. It's still a good idea for you to take your buddy with at night, it's like a your very own police officerSmile

Now let's wait for some looneytoon to berate you for

violating GLB. Hey, your doggie could have learned to read and
just not let you let you in on his secret new talent yet.
And maybe your car could have be stolen by aliens or , who knows????
Problably a good idea to schlep all your pkgs with you . Back in the
good old days, could have been carrying a dozen or so around by the
end of the day.

My Pooh goes with me anytime it is not too hot or cold and is my security blanket and company.
Think on it long and hard before you leave your pup at home, especially at night. There must be a way of securing your docs. Oreo was just playing with your toys.

"professional"

I dont know any other "professionals" that bring an animal with them to their job unless the job requires it.... How would you explain it to the borrowers and the lender...oh by the way my dog ate your loan docs!!! Nice

Jeff - Obviously you are not a dog person!

Other also posted that they took their dog along in the car, weather permitting. It's not like we are taking them into someone's house!

Re: Jeff - Obviously you are not a dog person! Also

obvious you are not a woman traveling alone at night. If I had a dog, he/she would definitely be going with me. Not too sure how good my cat would be if needed although she is extremely territorial too and LOVES to go bye-bye. _Shhs, don't anyone tell her she is not a person! Or even not a dog!

Just buy a.....

....plaster container thingy (not see through, but solid) where the lid snaps securely, a good solid one...nothing too cheap and flimsy. Put it on the passenger floor - and throw docs and your purse in it - you don't want your wallet and purse contents chewed up either. Meanwhile, have toys and treats to keep your doggie occupied. This works for not only loan signings but when you run errands and want to secure anything important while your dog is in the car too.

Problem solved.

Re: or you could buy...

Pet rocks make better daytime passengers. A husband, older son (or other large human male) or a big dog is the preferred passenger to ride along for a woman working at night or in unfamiliar territority.

I love my dog...

Just don't think it is professional to bring a pet along with me regardless if he is left in the car. If you love your pet you would leave it at home, were it is safe. If you need protection to do a signing then buy pepper spray. It's not like your dog in the car is going to protect you while your walking up to the house anyway!!!!!

I feel better now...

I came home from an appointment last week around dinner time and headed right into my office to my computer instead of to the kitchen to feed my two cats. The younger one (a nearly 15 yo black oriental shorthair who sometimes thinks he's a dog...), sometimes starts to chew things on my desk if he doesn't get what he wants fast enough. This time, he started to chew on a check (almost bit off the check number), and guess who got dinner in a hurry!! (He's lucky that's all he got....!) Fortunately, I don't generally leave loan packages on the desk, but I will be extra vigilant after your experience! (BTW, I taped the check back together and was able to deposit it successfully. Just caused a delay while the teller went to check with her supervisor about it. Wink)
