Website Link Exchanges - G/B/U

Am I taking link exchange requests too seriously? Like many of you with websites, on a weekly basis I receive unsolicited requests from other entities asking me to exchange website links with them. I understand the purpose behind this practice but I'm not convinced that it is always a good thing. I usually ignore the request but if I have some extra time, I'll check out the other company's website and try to determine just how their business traffic might benefit mine. This week an immigration lawyer contacted me and initially this looks like a good thing. But I don't know anything about the lawyer's ethics.

How do you determine who to exchange links with and who not to, especially when the request is unsolicited? Thank you.

I too receive lots of requests for link exchanges. Most of them have really nothing to do with my business model except in the remotest stretch of someone's imagination. 9 times out of 10 I won't even bother checking the website mentioned in the request and simply ignore the request.

If the request is from an organization that is connected is a reasonable way with my business, then I'm happy to oblige. Of course, notaries that have a website are always welcome and I maintain a page strictly for notaries and signing agents. (I ask for a reciprocal link to be placed on their site, but it is not a requirement to be added to my site.)
