Alabama Notaries

FYI:

I spoke with S.O.S. office this morning as I needed clarification on a few issues. She informed me that the SOS is planning to hold a conference for Alabama notaries on or about October 1st in Montgomery. The tentative time is 9am-12pm. She said I should contact her again in September to get more definitive info of time and date of the conference. I hope this pans out.

Tonya, thank you for posting this in the forum.

It's not often I hear about these things ahead of time. It will be interesting to see what type of communication piece the SOS does statewide. They have all of our addresses in their database. If they count on word-of-mouth, I doubt there will be much representation from North Alabama.

I wonder if this meeting has anything to do with SB 90 that was recently passed and goes into effect 1/1/2010. Alabama finally adopted the URPERA (Uniform Real Property Electronic Recording Act). I tried posting a link to the Bill here in NotRot but I got booted out of Internet Explorer so I won't try that again. You can Google it. My State Representative faxed me a copy of the version of the Bill that passed. I'm going to check to see if it changed much. I know quite a bit was posted about this subject here in NotRot months ago. I'm going to search to see what impact this had in other states on the notary, if any.

I dare not get my hopes up that Montgomery will announce that our notary fee will be increased from .50 cents per signature. If fees aren't mentioned at this conference you can bet I'll ask about it.

Thanks again, Tonya. Let us know if you hear anything else and I'll do the same.

Did they say if there will be a fee for the conference? Thanks for the info.

The lady I spoke with stated that she was unsure about what/if any fees will be required to attend.

I hope your conference is held by the state, and is not another one of the NNA shills.
It would be great to see the states get information to you directly.

I have to "tip my [straw] hat" to you, Tonya.

You obtained quite a bit of information from the SOS - all in one phone call. Just think, if you hadn't called to ask your question, there's no telling if we would have ever heard about this conference.

By the way, those of you who have been Alabama notaries for 5+ years, has the SOS done something like this in the past? If so, what was it about?

I'm really glad I called today. Even she stated that she wasn't sure how this will be communicated to the notaries in the state. :/
