Beginner needs help
Is this the place for a brand new notary to ask questions or is there a different link for a new beginner with questions.....such as how do you sign up to be hired for mortgage signing documents, etc

Not really, Jeanine. But I can start you out with some good advice. Start by reading message #33325. If you have any specific questions I recommend using the search feature first, then, if you don't get your answer in the archives, please feel free to ask in the forum. Use Signing Central to find companies who hire notaries and signing agents. The truth is, business has slowed down (depending on your geographical area), and business is not full time for many of us anymore. Best wishes and welcome!

Think you must be a Licensed Title Producer in VA
to do signings legally.

Re: Nope - that's Maryland
I tried to cross over into Virginia about a year ago and was also told that you needed to be licesed. Are you saying that's not the case?

Re: Believe VA requires a CRESPA certification?
CRESPA cert. is not required for an NSA. CRESPA is more or less a TPL, and it is not required at this point. In order to get it you have to be affiliated with a title company.

Re: Believe VA requires a CRESPA certification?
Agree with Marilynn, except to add that we cannot handle cash funds to or from borrower/buyer/seller without being CRESPA certified. There is much confusion about CRESPA. Do a search for CRESPA on this forum - specifically, see messages 241269, 260849 and 121033.

Re: Believe VA requires a CRESPA certification?
Yes, as Linda pointed out CRESPA is all about the "handling of funds". I was pretty paranoid about it, because the NNA makes it sounds like we can't touch a check. IMO "handling of funds" is in the settlement agent capacity--placing funds into an escrow account & disbursing. The most I ever do is include a certified or personal check made payable to the tc. I include it in the package & don't worry about it anymore.
