EOM - Not my best... a day in the life... ;>)
This is for those of you who think this business is great for just an extra something or for stay-at-home moms or dads to make some extra easy money. Unless you know how to turn on a dime, this business is not for you - especially at end-of-month. (And this is an oversimplification, 'cause by now, it's all run together in my head! ) Hopefully those of you who know better will at least get a little chuckle out of this, 'cause I know you can relate, if you've been at this for a while. BTW, it's also for those of you who only think about the "time at the table" when you think about fees!
Today was kinda like this:
Scramble, scramble, wait, wait, scramble, scramble, wait, scramble, scramble, scramble, scramble, scramble... yawwwwwn.
Unfortunately, not all the "scrambles" were signing appointments. I had one that was on again, off again, about four times. It was supposed to be for 1:30 pm and I had an 11:30 am that would give me just enough time to get back to print their docs and another set and meet them close by. Perfect, right?
Borrowers were gems, very flexible, but I still didn't have docs when I got back, so we tentatively rescheduled to the evening, since I was told that title hadn't gotten them yet, either, and I had another appointment later. Turns out they were sent to title last Friday. They finally send me the lender docs, with HUD, etc. to follow shortly. I printed in a hurry, hoping to free up my evening, then found out docs were wrong and we were told they would need to redraw. On again, off again ... I had another one in mid-afternoon for a borrower who was completely inflexible about the time, wanting to sign at his office 30 min. away. (SS was in a bind, so I'd agreed to help them out.) Borrower said he was the only signer. Finally get his docs and start printing away. Nearly done, I notice that there are NOBS signatures required.
I realize I should have checked more closely right away, but my phone kept ringing (the on-again, off-again, plus other assignments I had to turn down, including one from a favorite client). Call him back and find out that wife can't meet him at his office and signing will need to be at their home -- at 6:00 pm. Doing that one means another 25 miles farther, in the heart of rush hour. SS already offered me more than their usual fee and won't go any higher. I don't think so. So much for that one and I end up with a print fee instead of the other appt. from good client. Oh well...
Somewhere in there, I find out that instead of a redraw for the Gems, they're just going to replace a few docs. Great. On again. Now I don't have to shred the earlier package I'd already printed, so I call them back to see if we can reschedule for earlier again to fill the gap in the afternoon, since who knows what else the day will bring later. Get another call for a purchase, borrower wants to sign asap and docs are ready. Gems get moved back to 6:00 pm, but at least I've got their docs in hand, and the additional "pages" they were going to replace turned into just one. I have that added to their pile, hit the road and update them on progress, advising that I will call when done with current appt. and I'm on my way. They're fine with that.
Phone rings on the way, and it's the LO for the Gems, saying that they've sent me a couple more documents to add to their package, but now I'm on my way about 15 miles in the opposite direction from my office and printer. The new appt. needing to sign asap is a first time home buyer and docs need to be dropped in FedEx for delivery tomorrow. Got just enough time. Get to the guy's office, and Mom and Dad are there too, to provide moral support and I'm not sure what else. Oh yeah... lots of interruptions and dumb questions (even for a non-industry person) about stuff that I was just about to cover anyway. (It's just Dad trying to look out for / impress his son, I suppose.) What should have been an easy, quick package takes a little longer than necessary, but I make the FedEx cutoff for his docs.
Run back to my home office, print the late arrival pages and head off to meet with the Gems - and they truly were! We do the signing in an empty Del Taco (at their request) with 70's heavy metal music blaring in the background. Husband remembers all the names of who played what. I remember the music, too, and it surprises me that I used to actually listen to that stuff all the time! That may make me feel old, but I still could have handled one more signing tonight... except that my phone finally stopped ringing off the hook.
Guess I'd better call it a night, though. I've got an early appointment tomorrow for one that I was told was overnight docs to the borrower. But surprise, surprise... Turns out that apparently it was only the lender docs that were sent to them and I have two emails with escrow and title docs that need to be printed for that appointment. Don't you just love it when that happens? Grrrr.
Having said all that, if all my days were similar to this one I'd be a happy camper!
