HUD
When you have a check to return w/pkg. Is is appropriate to staple the check to the hud or do you just leave it unattached.
Thanks in advance

I usually paper clip it to the copy of the borrowers ID.

Staple to HUD
And make a note of the check # & bank... just in case the 'lose' it. The staple marks are a kind of proof that it WAS there.

I would not staple the check to the hud but I do make sure the check is in front of package so they do not miss it.

I staple the check to the HUD...and make a photocopy
of the first page of the HUD with the check attached.

I staple it to the HUD so that it can't accidentally get thrown away with the shipping package. A TC did that once and claimed I didn't send the check, I had paper clipped it to the HUD and it came loose in the package. When they removed the docs they didn't check for anything else in the package and threw the Fed Ex envelope in the trash. They started calling me demanding to know where the check was, I finally convinced them to check the Fed Ex envelope again and sure enough they had thrown the check away with the FED EX envelope.

I put the check in a bright neon colored envelope, write "FUNDS" on the outside of the envelope, seal it and then staple it across the top of a "junk" piece of paper - like the notary instruction sheet. It's on the top of the stack and the first thing seen when the package is opened.
Someone had suggested this here, awhile back and I've adopted this method and it works well.

I use envelopes like you do
I absolutely NEVER staple anything to anything, because of those darn 'unintended consequences'. Unless it's very, very obvious (like LKT's would be), I've seen too many checks and documents end up ripped apart by the copier/scanner.
For attaching voided checks to auto-pay or proceeds forms, I use tape and put on top of pkg.

Like many others, I too staple the check to the first page of the HUD. Then I photocopy the HUD with check attached (and usually shrunk to 8½x11). The photocopy is then made a part of the "closing report" documents that I fax/email to the hiring agency.

I tape it to a blank sheet of paper and put it first in the document package with the HUD right behind it. I carefully tape it just to the edge on both sides so it is easier to remove and copy without tearing the check.

Re: HUD==Staple
I staple it to the HUD too. I like having holes that prove that something was attached. I think I will adopt giving the borrowers a photo copy of the stapled check too. That way they will have proof that they sent a check.
